Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Communicable Disease Team at Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Trust. This is a great time to join an experienced team as we are looking to recruit a highly motivated registered nurse who would like to pursue a career in treatment and control of infectious disease with a focus on tuberculosis and hepatitis B.

This vacancy is open to internal and external staff and we would welcome applications from experienced RN colleagues.

Based at Minerva Health Centre Preston, the position will be predominantly covering the Preston, Chorley South Ribble and West Lancashire locality, but may also involve working across a wider geographical footprint to meet the needs of the service, including Blackpool, North Lancashire and Morecambe Bay. Full training and support will be provided and the team are fully supportive of continuing professional development, including the opportunity to undertake relevant nurse prescribing courses and post graduate study. There will also be the opportunity to attend regional and national TB update seminars and courses which may be available in the future.

Main duties of the job

The role of a Communicable Disease Specialist Nurse includes:

  • Supporting diagnostics, treatment and monitoring for patients with active/latent TB disease.
  • Provision of contact tracing to identify potential spread of infection and instigate medical investigation for this and referral to specialist physician for review and treatment.
  • Active TB case finding within hard to reach groups.
  • Supporting patients to completion of TB treatment.
  • Supporting vaccination programmes for TB and hepatitis B.
  • Outbreak management, with the support of the United Kingdom Health Security Agency.

The role also supports patients and staff within the Trust by giving advice on TB disease issues relating to active disease, treatment, contact tracing, inactive TB infection and to families and wider contacts in community and work or education settings.

You will deliver tailored awareness raising session in a variety of settings to a wide variety of groups including professional groups and the voluntary sector.

You will be able to demonstrate a keen interest in communicable disease and have an awareness of related Public Health issues.

You will be required to demonstrate the ability to motivate others, prioritise and work in a methodical manner. You must be computer literate and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
