Inpatient Services - THE ORCHARD, LANCASTER

Permanent. Band 8a Senior Clinical Psychologist post (0.5 wte: 18.75 hours per week)

We are looking to recruit a motivated Clinical Psychologist who has accredited training to a post graduate level or equivalent, currently registered with HCPC to work on one of our inpatient wards.

The Orchard is an 18 bedded mixed gender, acute mental health hospital in Lancaster.

The core role will be to provide psychological assessment and formulation for service users with moderate to severe mental health problems. It is also expected that there will be short term evidence based interventions and group work as part of the role.

The successful applicant will be supported by a Consultant Clinical Psychologist who inputs clinically onto the ward in the role as a Multi Professional Approved Clinician.

We are committed to CPD and there will be opportunities for post-qualification support, supervision and consolidation of core and specialist competencies, alongside more experienced colleagues both locally and across the county.

As well as having a clinical caseload, there will also be opportunities to develop and consolidate clinical and leadership skills, through indirect work, consultation, delivering training, and service development/audit activities.

Main duties of the job

To provide a qualified Clinical Psychology Service to inpatients at the ORCHARD, including the provision of enhanced specialist psychological assessment and therapy, working within the policies, procedures and protocols applicable to the service.

We regularly take trainees from the North West Clinical Psychology training courses and encourage staff to offer core and specialist placements to trainees.

To offer advice and consultation on patients' psychological care to psychology and non-psychology colleagues and to other, non-professional carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service's policies and procedures. To develop advanced skills in consultancy by implementing formal systems of consultancy within the nominated team(s), as directed and guided by your Locality Professional Lead and his/her deputies.

To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area in which the postholder works.

  • for those who trained prior to 1996, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.

Knowledge

Essential

  • An increased level of knowledge relevant to this post equivalent to a post-graduate diploma (in addition to entry level qualification)
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
  • HCPC registration as practitioner psychologist.

Experience

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of patients across a range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for patient's psychological care and treatment both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of multidisciplinary care plan.
