Job summary

A position has arisen for a Medical Education Facilitator, based in the Harbour. The role involves organising and facilitating all aspects of medical undergraduate education. This involves delivering teaching sessions and Case-Based Learning sessions to medical students, organising placements and overseeing all aspects of their mental health rotation placements to ensure they receive a high quality placement. The band 7 role is designed to be a mix of educational and clinical work. The post is primarily created to support medical student's education whilst they undertake mental health placements within Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde area in LSCFT.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for organising student placements within Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde services within LSCFT. There is an A+C role in place to support with the administrative and clerical duties involved.

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring students are allocated to inpatient wards and community teams, organise clinical learning opportunities, provide both formal and informal teaching/education sessions for medical students whilst they are on placement.

Job responsibilities

The aim of the post is to meet the responsibilities of the Trust in relation to the provision of medical education and training. In collaboration with the education providers the post holder would assist in the management of students and placements from various Medical Schools into a range of placements within Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde Services. The post holder will have expertise in the educational requirements of the undergraduate curriculum and the Speciality Training curriculum. The post holder instigates support and training in relation to the curriculum and assessment requirements, in respect of the undergraduate and postgraduate training for both trainees and educational supervisors.

To act as a specialist in undergraduate medical education (see above). One day per week as a senior nurse in Clinical Development/Clinical Practice (specific role TBC with Service Manager)

The post holder will be required to be accountable for their own actions, use own initiative and act independently.

To act as a specialist in medical training education and a source of advice, deliver relevant and regular training for colleagues as well throughout Local services and any outside agencies on mental health issues as appropriate.

Provide and receive complex and sensitive information to and from service users and carers along with Multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will be clinically up to date and expected to assist in driving up clinical and professional standards. Supporting and assisting the Modern Matron(s)

Specialist knowledge of the medical training curriculum from undergraduate to speciality trainee level.

Developing high quality student placements and posts in psychiatry settings in Local services.

To provide an effective link between service and education regarding placement issues.

To establish effective working relationships with consultant medical staff and other clinicians involved in medical education and training.

Medical Students:

  • Involve patients in seeing students; ensure all students get opportunities to access relevant clinical cases during the placement.
  • Facilitate the presentation of cases/histories and feedback.
  • Ensure all students are aware of the relevant key information in relation to psychiatry.
  • To provide an effective link between service and education regarding placement issues
  • Establishing systems for the effective delivery of medical education for trainees.
  • Provide support for the learner in understanding the curriculum and their training needs in relation to psychiatry
  • To assist learners in an understanding of the assessment process relevant to their placements in psychiatry and accessing relevant information.
  • Contributing to the planning and development of the weekly teaching programme.
  • Providing training sessions as part of teaching on relevant topics

General requirements:

  • To provide as required, timely reports to the Trust, University and relevant Deanery regarding issues to do with training and education in LCFT.
  • To establish effective working relationships with consultant medical staff and other clinicians involved in medical education and training
  • Commitment to continuing professional development of self and of the healthcare professionals
  • To provide an overview annually to the employing Trust of the development of this post as requested
  • Direct involvement with Trust staff and learners regarding assurance of quality within the placements. This can be both formally and informally with follow up of issues arising
  • Actual involvement in development of policies to safeguard students, staff and users
  • To establish effective working pastoral relationships with students/ trainees. This will also enable the post holder to identify and support, with the assistance of educational supervisors / college tutor, those in difficulty.
  • Map students / trainee curricular outcomes against clinical placements
  • To ensure that all statistical returns and expense sheets are submitted promptly

Education and Training

  • Maintain skills in Problem Based Learning (PBL), Case Based Discussion (CBD) to enable facilitation of PBL/CBD sessions in appropriate clinical areas as required by respective medical schools
  • Maintain skills in Work Place Based Assessments (WPBA) and enable education and completion of same.
  • Maintain skills to enable the post holder to act as an assessor, where appropriate, in competency based assessments at an undergraduate or postgraduate level

Educational:

  • Maintain a level of specialist knowledge and expertise relevant to working with Medical Students acquired through either in depth experience or theoretical study to post registration/graduate degree level or equivalent in a specific field.
  • This specialist knowledge must include theoretical, professional, specialist and practical knowledge; and knowledge of the policies, practices and procedures associated with the job.
  • Demonstrate fluency in a range of both simple and complex practical skills and be able to develop these skills in other team members and pre-registration nursing and medical students.
  • Disseminate good practice, which is evidence based by sound policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Attend appropriate and mandatory and other training and study to meet learning needs as identified in the Personal Development Review Process.
  • Attend post-basic educational programmes as required.
  • Possess a working knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983 and other relevant legislation.
