Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to manage an award winning male PICU team at the Scarisbrick Unit based within Ormskirk District General Hospital. This PICU works alongside a mixed sex acute ward and 136 suite and there is opportunity to contribute to the overall management and development of the unit. We pride ourselves on quality improvement and patient experience and want our wards to be at the forefront of person centred care and leading on new and exciting initiatives. Therefore, we are seeking a strong, caring and person centred individual to lead the PICU in achieving this and more.

The Ward Manager position requires strong leadership skills, clinical visibility and ability to engage with the full MDT and service users. The successful candidate needs to be a role model, coach and mentor to their diverse healthcare team of Senior Staff Nurses, Staff Nurses, RDNAs, TNAs, HCAs, Peer Support Workers and Student Nurses. There is an expectation that you will be able to provide meaningful supervision, debriefs and appraisals, encouraging staff wellbeing and development. Due to the nature of the PICU environment the ward manager will their colleagues and team in overcoming challenges and problem solving complex clinical issues.

Main duties of the job

Within the role, there is plenty of opportunity for professional development, in a way that's exciting and bespoke to your needs, these will be explored and actioned through regularly supervisions and Professional Development Meetings. This could include exploring training opportunities as Professional Nurse Advocate allowing meaningful and reflective supervisions across the unit, or developmental courses around your own leadership and management, among many more things.

At the Scarisbrick Unit, we welcome applicants who have a positive attitude and put service user care and staff wellbeing and development at the heart of everything that they do. Quality improvement is key within a dynamic PICU and there will be requirement to lead on the implementation and embed these initiatives into practice on the ward. Furthermore, there is opportunity to present these both within the Trust and Nationally, celebrating successes in improvement with other stakeholders. Recently Lathom Ward won awards for their work in reducing restrictive practice and engaging service users in meaningful activity. This has now been nominated at national award ceremonies in Nursing and Quality.
