Job summary

The post holder will be part of a team of 4 Consultant Forensic Psychiatrists based in the mental illness service. The post holder will lead a comprehensive multidisciplinary team which has good trainee medical and administration support. They will manage a caseload of 17 (+/- 2) male inpatients across the new admission / medium dependency ward and a second lower dependency ward thus maintaining responsibility for the patients as they progress through the medium secure service.

Main duties of the job

The Appointee will act as Responsible Clinician within a multidisciplinary team. They will take part in assessments of new referrals, pre-admission planning, management of inpatients and discharge planning.

They will join the rota to provide assessments of patients referred from the Merseyside and Cheshire catchment for admission to the service.

The successful applicant will also form part of a team offering a comprehensive assessment and consultation service to our local prisons, HMP Liverpool and HMP Altcourse. This will involve up to 2 sessions weekly and will comprise reviewing patients located in the healthcare wing, a clinic session and attendance at clinical team / referral meetings depending on the needs of the service and current provision.

The Appointee will exercise statutory responsibilities as a Responsible Clinician within the meaning of the Mental Health Act 1983 (Amended 2007) for patients detained under Restriction Orders, including completing statutory reports to the Ministry of Justice. For both non-restricted and restricted patients under his/her care he/she will be responsible for providing reports regarding Consent to Treatment and providing reports to, and attending, Tribunals and Managers' Reviews.

The Appointee will be expected to be approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 for the purposes of recommending admission to hospital and be an Approved Clinician.

Job responsibilities

The Appointee will act as Responsible Clinician within a multidisciplinary team. As part of the multi-disciplinary team, they will take part in assessments of new referrals, pre-admission planning, management of inpatients and discharge planning. The multi-disciplinary team will usually comprise of the consultant, a trainee doctor, clinical psychologist, social worker, occupational therapist and nursing staff. There is also access to a substance misuse/dual diagnosis practitioner, a senior pharmacist and Citizens Advice Bureau. Patients are also able to access services provided by the Life Rooms: a centre for learning, recovery, health and wellbeing.

The successful applicant will manage the care and treatment of 17 male in-patients within Rowan View. This will include patients across 2 admission/ medium dependency wards and a low dependency wards. The post holder will thus remain as RC as the patients progress through the clinic.

The Appointee will be involved in the assessment of individuals referred for admission to Rowan View from a variety of sources including Ashworth High Secure Hospital, Low Secure Units, general adult or old age mental health services, Courts or Prisons.

Along with all Consultants based at Rowan View the appointee will undertake input into one of the local prisons. It is anticipated this will be 1 day per week (2 sessions) at either HMP Liverpool or HMP Altcourse. Both are Category B prisons located within Liverpool. Prisoners are referred and allocated for assessment via a Single Point of Referral meeting and cases are managed by the Mental Health Inreach Teams in the respective prisons.

The post will require liaison with other agencies, including the Ministry of Justice, police, probation, social care and other mental health services.

The Appointee will be expected to participate in the management of the wards where his/her patients are based and attend patient care team meetings and other ward-related meetings as appropriate.

The Appointee will be expected to participate in the delivery of education and training to trainee medical staff and other disciplines where such activity has been clearly defined by the Clinical Tutor. The Appointee will be expected to participate in the general teaching and training responsibilities of the service across the region. There may be opportunities to provide clinical attachments for medical students.
