We now have an exciting opportunity for a full time Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist to join our friendly Southport & Formby Community Neuro Rehabilitation Team.

The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team composed of Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Vestibular Physiotherapy within the Southport & Formby Community Neuro Rehabilitation & Speech Language Therapy Team. The service aims to provide seamless care through community/home based rehabilitation to patients presenting with both neuro and non neuro speech and language therapy needs which may include the areas of dysphagia, dysfluency, head & neck and voice.

Main duties of the job

The main duties are mostly clinical and post holder will be responsible to provide leadership and coordination of the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service, ensuring efficient management of clinical caseload and the waiting list ; demonstrate expert knowledge and clinical skills (including experience with video-fluoroscopy) ensuring it is in line with recent guidelines and evidence base practice; to use a variety of assessments skills and ability to evaluate treatment and set smart goals; to manage a complex caseload and be proactive to seek peer support when required; to demonstrate multidisciplinary approach and respect the views of other MDT members; demonstrate knowledge of different outcome measures and its application; to carry out complex risk assessment ensuring ability to sign post/advice/handle safeguarding cases/situations effectively and to demonstrate excellent documentation skills and ability to evaluate plan.

The managerial tasks involves: to demonstrate excellent managerial skills ensuring the service adheres to the service specification and pathway; demonstrates effective skills in the management of personnel and staff performance monitoring, able to assist with recruitment process, provide excellent supervision skills and support to junior staff and students; be actively involved in the training and teaching, promote research within team; deputise during the absence of the Operational Lead ensuring daily operational tasks are completed.

Key Responsibilities

  • The post holder main responsibilities will be expected to be approximately 70% of clinical input and 30% of managerial tasks.
  • To be able to hold a complex caseload and be accountable for delivering high-quality Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) services at patients homes/clinics/residential or nursing homes/Attend Anywhere System.
  • To demonstrate advanced knowledge about SLT rehabilitation process and use interpersonal skills to encourage patients to engage in rehabilitation and recovery.
  • To be accountable for the delivery of highly specialist skills and professional leadership intervention within the areas of adult acquired neuro and non neuro communication and swallowing disorders including dysfluency, head & neck cancer and voice.
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day clinical input in the SLT team which include: leading the case allocation meeting ensuring caseload is distributed fairly amongst the team and within staff level of competencies as well as ensuring patients on caseload are kept for the time recommended by the service specification description to avoid unnecessary patients on caseload/allow patient flow, to ensure daily triaging of new referrals, effective booking of appointments, data input in spreadsheet for monitoring of service performance, identify risks (to patients and staff) and sign post/advise on safeguarding, provision of clinical support to staff as requested or identified.
  • To be responsible for day-to-day managerial tasks of which will include: to ensure colleagues are well supported within the team, buddying system is in place and working effectively, attendance and/or leading daily huddle meetings, management and monitoring of SLT staff performance is kept to a high standard, provision of efficient clinical supervision to junior staff and students, team time management is effective, to carry out of staff clinical risk assessments as identified, ensure SLT staff adhere to Trusts policies and procedures, development and/or involvement in audits to monitor efficiency and quality of service and active participation in service development.
  • To lead on the implementation of national pathways/guidelines for acquired neuro/non-neuro SLT and best practice initiatives within the service and be accountable for overall clinical standards.
  • To take part in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of SLT services within the designated areas, holding responsibility for defined projects, including the development of team outcome measures, clinical risk assessment, documentation, integration of service, MDT work and operational policies in conjunction with other team leaders.
  • To participate and assist with recruitment process as required, including attendance at the interview panel, review of interview questionnaire and job adverts, provision of induction to new members of staff.
  • To lead/contribute to training and development programmes relating to the field of expertise, delivering to other professionals both within and outside the NHS and service users.
  • To support Operational Manager and Service Manager with the re-design and integration of change in the service as required and active participation on tasks related to key performance indicators and CQC reviews/action plan reports.
