Job summary
The Trust is seeking a Specialty Doctor in Psychiatry to join Learning Disability Services for adults presenting with mental and behavioural disorders within community and inpatient setting.
The vacancy has arisen with restructuring of consultant workforce following Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust acquisition of former North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
The post holder would support the clinical work of 2 WTE Consultant Psychiatrists in Learning Disability. The post holder will provide medical input to service users within the Community LD services covering St Helens, Knowsley and South Liverpool along with some input to Byron Ward for 8 sessions of direct clinical care, with 2 remaining sessions allocated to supporting professional activities eg: education & training.
Main duties of the job
The post holder would work with 2 Consultants, accounting for 2WTE:
- The LD service in South Liverpool and Byron Ward employs 1 WTE consultant psychiatrists in intellectual disability. Byron Ward is a 10 bedded assessment and treatment unit situated in Warrington. The South Liverpool Community LD service is based at Norris Green Hub in Liverpool.
- The LD service in St Helens and Knowsley employs 1 WTE consultant psychiatrists in intellectual disability. The service is based at Willis House in Whiston, Prescot.
The post holder will provide medical input to service users within the Community LD services covering St Helens, Knowsley and South Liverpool along with some input to Byron Ward for 8 sessions of direct clinical care, with 2 remaining sessions allocated to supporting professional activities eg: education & training.
The clinical input requires specialist assessment followed by management of mental and behavioural disorders in adults with Learning Disability.

The post holder would support the clinical work of 2 WTE Consultant Psychiatrists in Learning Disability. There are funded core trainee posts in both the above services. Both the services are adequately supported by medical secretaries and transcriptionists
The services provides for adult age patients with Learning Disability associated with mental illness, personality disorder, pervasive developmental disorders and behavioural problems. There is active liaison with primary and secondary care services to improve the physical health of people with learning disabilities. The service is actively involved with the local transforming care agenda and LEDER process.
The Specialist Learning Disability Division also has Specialist Support Teams which work across the North West. This service aims to prevent the admission or re-admission to secure services and provides support and advice to local learning disability services in helping to look after service users in the community and to stop future admissions.
Services are provided by the multi-disciplinary team, including Consultant medical staff, non-Consultant medical staff, Clinical Psychologists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, Speech Therapists, Behaviour Therapists, Nurse Managers and Nurses in learning disability.
The trainees on rotation provide first and second on call cover out of hours.
There is a local academic programme held weekly on Tuesday morning or afternoon as well as monthly full day Regional Learning Disability Training days at Hollins Park hospital site.
The post holder will provide medical input to service users within the Community LD services covering St Helens, Knowsley and South Liverpool along with some input to Byron Ward for 8 sessions of direct clinical care, with 2 remaining sessions allocated to supporting professional activities eg: education & training.
Changing need and service development will require flexible cover to be provided to the wider community LD services caseload at times, however the core role will be supporting Consultant Psychiatrist Drs Dinnahalli and Dr Dhillon.
New referrals are allocated into each of the teams from an agreed division of patch GPs. CPA reviews will take place largely at Willis House and Norris Green Hub, with some service users being seen at home when indicated. Follow up clinics take place at Willis House and Norris Green Hub.
Most new to service assessments are carried out in outpatients or by other members of the CMHT; the post holder will provide supervision as required to such assessments (via MDT Meeting). Complex new to service assessments will be carried out by the post holder in conjunction with other members of the LD Team supported by the consultants.
Patients at risk of admission or in crisis are supported by Specialist Support Teams. The post holder will be expected to medically review these service users within the clinic.
The post holder will have access to allocated office space at Willis House with a computer with Internet access and a fax. A smart phone and laptop can be provided. Other specific technical support can be negotiated. The post holder will have access to a dedicated band 4 medical secretarial and dedicated band 3 transcriptionist support in post.
There is an on call commitment with this post with ST in Psychiatry (supporting Core Trainees as first on call and Consultant Psychiatrist as third on call). It is therefore desirable post holder has Section 12(2) approval or within 6 months or being in post gets this approval. On call covers both General Adult and Old Age patients. On call is approximately 1 in 17 and is remunerated with 2PAs.
