Job summary

This post would be ideally suited for a doctor, who has a minimum of 2 years experience in psychiatry and is interested working in a Trust grade position in psychiatry outside of a Training position. Mental Health Liaison is an integral part of the 24/7 Urgent Care Model and the Trust is seeking a Specialty Doctor in Psychiatry to cover both General Adult and Old Age referrals for Southport and Formby District General Hospital (SDGH) A&E Department and wards.

The successful candidate would have the option of continuing ongoing work in a specialty grade position, or considering the option of applying for Specialty Training in Psychiatry in the future. An alternative career path would be progression as a Specialty Grade doctor and with the possibility of gaining a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) via Article 14 route once required experience can be evidenced in the future. There would be an opportunity, subject to application and approval to join the local MRCPsych programme if this is to be part of the post-holders PDP.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties

  • The post holder will provide medical input for both General Adult (GA) & Old Age (OA) Mental Health Liaison Team. The post holder will be available to support and supervise other staff in the assessment and formulation of service users difficulties. They will be directly involved with the assessment of people referred with complex difficulties or prominent risk issues. The post-holder will communicate with clinical staff providing physcial treatment of the Patient.
  • Your role will include assessment of urgent referrals from the inpatient wards and accident and emergency department. Medical support is provided for more complex cases and those requiring the specific skills of a liaison psychiatrist. This will include leading on the training of other hospital staff and interacting with other medical professionals throughout the hospital.
  • Out of Hours on call rota.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the interface between physical illness and mental illness; undertake diagnosis and formulation of management plans in complex cases; advise medical teams on appropriate integrated care and assess and manage risk (e.g. suicide risk, violence/aggression, absconding) relating to psychiatric conditions in general hospital settings.
  • Provide advice on prescribing to medical teams on psychotropic medication; provide expertise, and fulfill a statutory role, in managing medico-legal issues in the general hospital, including application of mental health and mental capacity legislation; understand the medical issues in assessing patients with medically unexplained symptoms and understand the medical issues in mental health patients associated with long-term conditions.
  • Collaboration with medical colleagues to ensure availability for emergency liaison assessments through the daytime (9am to 5pm) within the locality and also to provide cross-cover during periods of annual/study leave.
