Medical Secretary

Job summary

We are looking for a dedicated and highly organised Medical Secretary to join the General Respiratory team at Wythenshawe Hospital. The working hours are 28 per week, over 5-days. This position offers an excellent opportunity to play a key role in supporting a busy and growing clinical service.

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to consultants and the wider clinical team. Key responsibilities include audio typing/proof reading, managing correspondence, coordinating referrals, and supporting clinic operations.

The ideal candidate will have strong administrative skills, a high level of attention to detail, and experience in a similar role. Familiarity with medical terminology would be advantageous and a professional approach to patient communication are essential.

Main duties of the job

Provide accurate and efficient transcription and proof reading of medical letters and reports, ensuring all deadlines are met.

Process, sort, and distribute incoming mail (electronic and paper), ensuring relevant documentation is available for review.

Manage referrals, ensuring timely prioritisation and compliance with targets such as cancer pathways.

Coordinate appointments, investigations, and urgent admissions as required.

Support waiting list management alongside clinical teams and clerks.

Maintain patient records, ensuring accuracy and timely filing of results and documentation.

Handle telephone queries promptly and communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.

Assist with some diary management and the organisation of meetings.

Provide professional and caring communication with patients, ensuring information is clear and appropriately delivered.

Support the Team Leader with the induction and training of new staff as required
