An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join the Manchester Airways Service for a 12-month secondment.
The Manchester Airways Service investigates and treats patients with breathlessness and laryngeal sensitivity thought to be caused by problems in the throat and upper chest, or by disturbance of the normal breathing pattern. The most common conditions we diagnose and manage are Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO), Cough Hypersensitivity and Breathing Pattern Disorder.
Our service provides a tertiary level service, where patients are referred to us from both GPs and hospital consultants, regionally and nationally. We are a true multi-disciplinary team consisting of respiratory physicians, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, clinical nurse specialist, psychologists and administration support. There are currently only ten similar services in the UK.
Main duties of the job
To provide high quality assessment and treatment of upper airway dysfunction and complex breathlessness, taking responsibility for complex cases including Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction, heightened laryngeal sensitivity and other airway conditions. To take a lead on and provide evidenced based Speech and Language Therapy assessment, treatment and intervention to patients and their carer's.
To work closely with the multi-disciplinary team to provide specialised programmes of care for patients on the caseload and provide specialist input into case conferences, regional multi-disciplinary team meetings and outpatient clinics as appropriate.
To act in a lead role initiating and providing input to the teaching, research, audit and service development functions of the respiratory department.
Supervision will be provided within the role as applicable.
