Sonographer

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 11 May 2025

Job summary

Are you a Sonographer with a PGC or PGD in Medical Ultrasound, and experience in Obstetrics, Gynae and General Medical Ultrasound? Then consider a move to the Ultrasound team at Manchester University Foundation NHS Trust.

This post is open for all Sonographers and will be based at Wythenshawe Hospital. We have a broad caseload of obstetric and non-obstetric work including an emergency gynae unit.

Across our sites we have Siemens Redwood and Sequoia US machines and brand new GE Volusons in our maternity US department. We offer a high quality and specialised service throughout all stages of pregnancy, gynaecology, abdominal, paediatrics, MSK, neck and scrotal ultrasound scans in an acute hospital setting.

Providing an efficient ultrasound service and a welcoming atmosphere for patients, you'll be a vital member of a team of dedicated sonographers who work together to deliver the best possible service and patient care.

To succeed, you'll need proven ultrasound experience and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of patients and carers. Flexibility in your approach to work is essential.

In return, the Directorate encourages education and training for all staff with continuing professional development opportunities and ongoing training into specialised and enhanced areas of practice.

We are currently able to offer a Recruitment and Retention Premium after 12 months service.

Main duties of the job

Working autonomously as a member of a multidisciplinary team to provide a full ultrasound service within the Ultrasound Departments at Manchester Foundation Trust, the main base will be Wythenshawe Hospital with the possibility of cross site working if service demand dictates.

This role involves using complex ultrasound equipment to scan a wide selection of patients referred from many clinical areas, issuing a written report on the results, and discussing these when appropriate with both the patient and the referring clinicians.

Clinical expertise and excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential for the post. Discussing potentially distressing results with the patient is a requirement of the post. The sonographer must have the ability to impart bad news in a compassionate and understanding manner.

Taking part in student training is also an essential element of this position and Wythenshawe has a dedicated state of the art Ultrasound training room, complete with multiple phantoms.
