Job summary

Applications are invited for this post, based at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH), for the clinical management of children with congenital hyperinsulinism and paediatric endocrine disorders. The Paediatric Endocrinology service at RMCH, is the largest paediatric endocrine service in the UK. The service includes nationally commissioned Congenital Hyperinsulinism and Hypophosphatasia services. The Fellowship post is for fixed term for up to 2 years. The fellow has the opportunity to undertake research up to 2 days per week and most previous fellows have completed a higher degree with the University of Manchester.

The Fellow will gain clinical experience in paediatric endocrinology and congenital hyperinsulinsim. He/she will play a key role in the management of endocrine patients, with responsibility for inpatient and outpatient care. In addition, the post holder will be expected to participate in quality improvement projects (QIP), audit and endocrine research.

Each doctor will have a named Educational Supervisor Study / exam leave together with financial support available for suitable study courses on request.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be based at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital as a member of the paediatric endocrine team. He/she will be involved in the care of CHI and other endocrine patients both as an in and outpatients. The post holder will be expected to receive and undertake daytime telephone calls to and from other centres specifically in relation to advice for the care of children with CHI, including new referrals. This will be done in conjunction with the consultant on-call. He/she will liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team which include 2 CHI specialist nurses, dietitians, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists, surgeons, NORCHI administrator, nuclear medicine, radiologists and histopathologists. Other duties include supervision of ST1-3 on the ward and day case unit and clinical administrative duties.

Opportunities will exist for flexibility in the weekly timetable (see below) and to develop protocol-driven care pathways and participate in governance activity to improve the quality of the service.
