Job summary
The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital is the largest Children's Hospital in the UK. It has a large General Paediatric Department for the local population and all tertiary specialities which cover the wider region. The hospital is within the same site as St Mary's Hospital, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary. This allows for easy transition from neonatal care to Paediatric care and then to adult care. The specialities all work well together and with the Paediatric Emergency Department. Patient records are all electronic which helps to coordinate care.
The successful candidates will work alongside more than 30 other resident doctors at an equivalent level (GP ST2, FY2 and ST 1-3) in different specialities and a combined on call rota. The posts are suitable for doctors who have completed at least 4 months of Paediatric training at level FY2 or above.
Each department has resident doctors at 2 tiers corresponding to the previous grades of SHO and registrar. They cover that department's patients from 8am - 4pm. Out of hours, there is a combined on call rota covering inpatients and acute admissions including evenings, weekends and nights. The weekend frequency is approximately 1:4 (this includes day and night shifts). Overall nights frequency is approximately 1 week in 12 (split) but this depends on whether General Paediatrics or Tertiary. The weekday evening frequency is approximately 1 in 6.
Main duties of the job
For all specialties including General Paediatrics, the working day is 8am to 4:30pm with the last half an hour as handover. Each specialty will have it's own departmental induction and the inpatient work will be consultant and registrar led. The duties will include:
Ward round reviews, usually with senior oversight
Assessment of new patients in A&E
Management of day case patients
Medical procedures as needed.
