Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 3 phlebotomist/Senior nursing assistant to join the team in Genomic medicine. The Genomic outpatient area has 12 clinic rooms and can see both adult and paediatric patients. The post holder along side their venepuncture skills will be expected to chaperone doctors/nurses, assist with procedures and perform nursing assistant duties.
Clinical Genetics is a medical discipline specialising in the diagnosis and management of conditions with a known or probable genetic basis. Genetic disorders occur across the whole lifespan and may affect multiple family members and generations. Families often require both specialist diagnosis and health management.
We provide specialist, family-centred services for:
- Diagnostic assessment
- Current and accurate medical information
- Risk estimation for pregnancies and the extended family
- Genetic counselling
- Management and support to individual patients of any age
We work with our laboratory colleagues and clinical colleagues from a variety of medical specialties across Greater Manchester and the North West region.
Clinical staff in the department are affiliated to one or more clinical teams. Clinical teams comprise of doctors, genetic counsellors, nursing staff and other health professionals. Working in the Outpatient area in Genomics you will be expected to work along side these clinical teams.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the role include:
To carry out venepuncture on both adult and paediatric patients attending the outpatient area in Genomics
To ensure that all specimens for investigative test are correctly labelled, bagged and dispatched to the appropriate laboratory, in line with trust policy
Following training if required, undertake blood pressure and pulse measurement, urine analysis
Assist and Chaperone the clinicians in a variety of clinic when appropriate
Undertake height and weight measurements
To report any incidents or changes in a patient's health status immediately to a registered professional
Assist lead nurse in implementing infection control procedures feeding back any concerns
