Locum Consultant in Breast Surgeon

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 25 September 2024

Job summary

The Nightingale Centre hosts the Greater Manchester NHS Breast Screening Programme for approx 35,000 women each year, and treats around 650 screen-detected cancers per annum. In addition, the Unit provides a service to women with symptomatic breast disease and treats around 500 symptomatic breast cancers each year. We do 200 breast reconstructions annually and we are a tertiary centre for patients with difficult breast problems or for primary or delayed breast reconstructions plus offering a risk reducing mastectomy and reconstruction service,

The out-patient department is within the Nightingale Centre and is staffed by a dedicated team of outpatient nurses. Routine follow ups are managed by specialist nurses under a patient self-directed care protocol and have been acknowledged for their quality by winning a national MacMillan award. All patients have access to a routine post operative physiotherapy appointment and ongoing breast physio follow up as needed. There is also a dedicated lymphoedema service.

The expertise built up by the multi-disciplinary team thus provides a high-quality clinical service as a 'breast unit' to our local community as well as a 'cancer centre' to the Greater Manchester area and North West region. There is extensive oncoplastic and reconstructive breast surgery performed on the unit. All members of the multidisciplinary team are friendly and supportive with an ongoing desire for leading and inspiring excellence in breast care for all.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will join a large team of oncoplastic breast surgeons in one of the busiest breast services in the UK based at the Nightingale Centre, Wythenshawe Hospital for a 12 month fixed term appointment. The Wythenshawe breast service is part of the larger Manchester Breast Service - a single managed service that joined together the breast units from Wythenshawe Hospital and North Manchester General Hospital in April 2023- making the Manchester Breast Service the largest in the UK. The breast GiRFT review described our service as the largest breast surgery practice in England with just under 6800 breast operations performed between 2014-2017. The GiRFT assessment found outcomes for breast surgery to be at the upper end of national figures for a wide range of qualitative parameters. We also host the largest reconstructive/oncoplastic service in the UK.
