An exciting opportunity is available to join our growing team of Genomic Associates and Practitioners at the Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine.
Manchester Centre for Genomic Medicine is an integrated multidisciplinary genomic medicine service where Clinical Genetics, Willink Metabolic service, the Manchester Rare Conditions Centre and part of the North West Genomic Laboratory Hub are co-located on the 6th floor of the hospital. The department also has a substantial portfolio in Education, Training and Research including genetic counsellor pathway leads for the MSc for the STP in genomic counselling. As a large team of clinical geneticists and genetic counsellors, the service is organised into subspecialties in Cancer, Prenatal, Cardiac, Neurogenetics, Ophthalmology, Deafness and Developmental Disorders.
Applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences are welcomed. The post would suit an individual with healthcare experience who is confident communicating with patients and families. A caring and compassionate nature, empathic and non-judgmental approach and understanding of clinical genetics and attention to detail is essential.
Although fixed term for two years, we are hopeful the roles will become a substantive part of our clinical genetics workforce.
Main duties of the job
The role is responsible for facilitating the collection of information, consent, samples and test results to enable genomic counselling and testing for patients with rare diseases and their family members. Working within the clinical genetics department, the role will involve communicating with patients and their families directly by phone, video call and face to face to obtain family and medical histories to facilitate the diagnosis of genetic and genomic conditions. It will include obtaining appropriate samples for genetic testing and recording consent for these where appropriate.
The genomic associate (practitioner) will work with families either prior or post clinic to improve experience and outcomes. The Genomic Associate (Practitioner) will also help to facilitate access to the service, particularly amongst marginalised communities and families who are difficult to engage.
Each Genomic Associate (Practitioner) will be allocated to one or two clinical subspecialty, to support the clinical work within those clinical teams and prioritise the genomic associate work needed within those teams.
Other roles may include facilitating patient support days, patient engagement events, professional education events and coordinating multidisciplinary meetings. Joining a team of Genomic Associates (Practitioners), the post holder will help to develop processes and support Band 4 staff.
