Job summary

Targeted Lung Health Check Programme ( TLHC) programme forms part of the NHS Long Term Plan to improve early diagnosis and survival for those diagnosed with cancer in the UK.

It targets those most at risk of lung cancer and will initially work with CCGs who have some of the highest rates of mortality from lung cancer.

People aged over 55 years old but less than 75 years old that have ever smoked will be invited to a free lung check.

Following the lung health check, those assessed as high risk will be offered a low dose CT scan. It is estimated that approximately 3,400 cancers will be found - many earlier than they would have done otherwise - and the NHS will be able to offer more treatments, such as curative surgery which will save people's lives.

This is a new position, to work for the Manchester Foundation Trust and closely with the thoracics team provide a high quality service. The role will support the Principal CT Radiographer and work alongside two Thoracic band 7s radiographers already in post. This role is to ensure the smooth running and management of the new interventional CT scanner and part of the role will involve assisting the lead radiologist with review of previous imaging, involvement with MDT and onwards diagnostics.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have a keen interest in thoracic radiology and will need to work closely with the Thoracic team and RAPID hub. This is a new role to support the onwards diagnostics from the expansion of the Greater Manchester Targeted Lung Health Check Programme, working for the Trust but in close liaison with the Thoracics team to support the Principal CT Radiographer to ensure a high-quality service is provided.

There is a need to be able to work independently to justify referrals and manage workloads. You will also need to work closely with Principal CT radiographer in main department about onwards diagnostics from the screening programme and contribute to the clinical service. The post holder will need to be proficient in radiation protection measures and procedures.

The successful candidate will need to work closely with lead thoracic radiologist to review previous scans images to see if images suitable or further imaging required, attend MDT, supporting the service. Training will be given. We are exploring the possibility to consolidate this training in the future to PG Cert level to allow for the reporting of low dose CT lung scans (This needs to be agreed with University to formalise). Further development of advanced CT practice is also being considered to support the onwards diagnostics and biopsy services.

The successful candidate will be supported to develop leadership skills within the CT department and wider directorate.
