Job summary

We are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for Senior clinical embryologist in the renowned Department of Reproductive Medicine, Old St Mary's Hospital, Manchester. Our programme treats NHS and fee paying patients and currently performs 1250 cycles of IVF/ICSI and 400 cycles of frozen embryo replacements annually.The post holder has responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day working of the Clinical Embryology laboratory in the Department of Reproductive Medicine. The Department provides infertility treatment services to the North West Region of England, including In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), IntraCytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), insemination with donor sperm (DI), cryopreservation and vitrification of sperm, embryos and ovarian tissue, banking of semen prior to cancer treatment, provision of donated sperm, eggs and embryos.

The post-holder will be supportive to the strategic direction of the UK NEQAS Reproductive Science Schemes.

The Department also provides a national and international lead in clinical and research areas including tissue cryopreservation, research into human embryo development and derivation of embryonic stem cells at Tissue Banking/Good Manufacturing Practice standards. The work of the Department is regulated and licenced by UK statutory bodies including the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will work within and help supervise a team of nine clinical embryologists and will be joining a group based at Old St Mary's and also the University of Manchester, with a strong interest in research and service development. Current areas of active research include embryo culture and selection, blastocyst formation and surgical sperm retrieval service.The candidate ideally will have gained the essential requirements of State Registration and be fully trained in all IVF procedures and an ICSI practitioner along with having experience of training and managing staff.

Additional responsibilities include involvement in Quality Management of Laboratory including undertaking Audits, documentation and procedure review and leading on projects within the department related to quality improvement or improved patient care.

The post-holder is supportive to the strategic direction of the UK NEQAS Reproductive Science Schemes. The post- holder is also supportive to the Scheme organiser for the delegation of roles to other staff members through the EQA Management team, selection and preparation of samples and videos for distribution, regular liaison with participants and oversight of all aspects of scheme design and operation.
