Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for senior fellowship positions in Lung Cancer and Pleural within the Thoracic Oncology Directorate based at Wythenshawe Hospital. The positions are suited to respiratory trainees who have completed their CCT or equivalent in respiratory medicine and wish to specialise further in thoracic oncology. Candidates in their final year of specialist training will also be considered for the position.
Two posts are available, with one aiming to start from February 2023 onward and another in August 2023 but dates are negotiable pending applicants.
The team has access to a state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment centre to provide autofluorescence, radial and linear endobronchial ultrasound, photodynamic therapy and navigational bronchoscopy. The pleural team provides an indwelling pleural catheter and medical thoracoscopy service.
Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work with the award winning RAPID Lung Cancer Programme which is fully compliant with the optimal lung cancer pathway. They will also be involved in delivering the Manchester Lung Health Check Screening Programme. We work as part of a large multidisciplinary team and there will be the opportunity to gain further experience in rigid bronchoscopy/airway management with our thoracic surgical colleagues and gain experience in medical/radiation oncology.
Main duties of the job
Successful candidates will gain experience in all aspects of thoracic oncology and pleural medicine. There will be an opportunity to gain experience in the triage and assessment of new lung cancer patients working in the award-winning RAPID service.
Each fellow will have 3 to 4 dedicated procedure lists per week to include linear and radial EBUS, navigational bronchoscopy alongside pleural lists including IPC and thoracoscopies. We expect fellows to be independent in these procedures by the end of the fellowship. There are two lung cancer MDT's, one stop clinic (for high-risk patients who meet surgeons, clinical oncologists, anaesthetists, onco-geriatrician, Prehab4Cancer and specialist smoking cessation team) and a regional mesothelioma MDT per week. Each fellow is responsible for co-ordinating and presenting at an MDT per week.
Each fellow will be given dedicated research time and research projects will be discussed with the successful candidate on commencing the post with our service having a strong reputation in producing research output in lung cancer.
