Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for afull time Youth Worker to join the Northern Care Alliance as part of Oldham Care Organisation and managed by Manchester University Foundation Trust (MFT) Youth Service at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. The role is a full-time position predominantly Monday to Friday with occasional weekend, evening and residential work. The post is working across Oldham, Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale and we are looking for someone with a minimum of 2 years youth work experience in the NHS, voluntary sector, or community services.

The Youth Worker will be supporting young people with Epilepsy a long-term health condition. The focus of the work will be on the young person's social and emotional needs within the children's, adult and community services. The Youth Worker will work alongside the multi-professional team including Doctors, Specialist Nurses Therapies and Health Play Specialists. They will provide holistic advice and care to young people that are being prepared for the move from children to adult healthcare services. The Youth Workers will deliver this work through one to one, group work, peer support and youth work sessions. The Youth Worker should be self-motivated, can use their own initiative and be responsive to the needs of young person in a healthcare setting.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role are:

  • Supporting young people with a long term health condition, both when they are an inpatient and outside of the hospital setting.
  • Provide holistic support for the young people to meet their individual needs. Acting as an advocate to multiple services including hospital, education and employment. This requires good communication skills, active listening skills and to be empathetic towards the young person's needs.
  • Provide support and guidance to the young people during their healthcare transition between children's and adult services.
  • Supporting patients on the wards throughout their treatment whilst they are unwell. The Youth Worker should have the ability to deal with challenging situations in the healthcare setting, have a degree of resilience and be able to work in clinical areas.
  • Plan and run Youth Club sessions and off site activities, including residential weekends,
  • Being creative, dynamic and self-motivated are desirable attributes of the Youth Worker.
  • Be part of the staff team who support the Youth Forum.
  • Work with the multi-professional team, building relationships and working within Youth Worker professional boundaries.
  • Good working knowledge of computer systems and documenting to a high standard is essential.
