About us
Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the United Kingdom formed from the merger of North Manchester General Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Wythenshawe Hospital, the latter two sites being cardiothoracic surgical centres. Cardiac Surgery forms a fundamental part of Trust activity, delivered through the newly created Manchester Heart Institute (MHI) as part of a single cardiac service across the Trust footprint.
Standardised mortality rates for cardiovascular disease remain among the highest in Britain, due to a combination of social deprivation and historical inequity of access to specialist care in comparison to other regions. The unmet need for local patients thus remains significant, and MHI will play a role in redressing these imbalances.
MHI serves a population of over 3.2 million for tertiary services in cardiac surgery, complex electrophysiology, advanced imaging and acute and elective coronary and structural intervention. Additional secondary care services are provided at district hospital sector laboratories, with colleagues from these sites participating in on-call and sessional activity at the surgical centres.
