Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow (CRF) in Hepatology. This post offers an exciting opportunity to pursue high quality and clinically important research in the field of hepatology and hepatocellular carcinoma research with the aim of achieving a higher degree. The post offers the opportunity to work alongside a successful research team with an excellent track record in high quality and innovative research in the field of hepatology.
he post is not recognised for training however would be suitable for a trainee applying for Out-of-Programme for Research. The project will be co-supervised by Dr Varinder Athwal (Consultant Hepatologist/Senior Clinical Lecturer), Prof. Neil Hanley (Professor of Medicine, Director R&I) and Prof. Karen Piper Hanley (Professor of Research, FMBH, UoM).
e clinical research fellow will be given appropriate training to complete a higher degree; this will be focussed on diagnostic biomarkers, community pathways and prognostic epidemiology.
Main duties of the job
This is a post intended either for a gastroenterology/hepatology trainee (ST4-8) or a candidate at an earlier stage (IMT3) with the intention to pursue a career in hepatology/gastroenterology. The post will allow the candidate the opportunity to spend a period of time in research to obtain an MD or a PhD. The successful applicant may undertake up to two clinical training sessions in hepatology per week.
The ambition of the project is integrating diagnostics pathways between primary and secondary care in liver disease. This post will involve collaboration with academics from the University of Manchester, hospital trusts, primary care and industrial partners, as part of The health innovation accelerator funding secured from Government by Health Innovation Manchester, https://healthinnovationmanchester.com/news/gm-secures-multi-million-investment-to-improve-the-diagnosis-and-treatment-of-disease-to-save-more-lives/. The training will be tailored to individual needs. Clinical MDs/PhDs in Manchester are assessed mainly through original research and publication and defence of a thesis. However, there is a requirement to attend formal taught course components especially tailored for clinical trainees. There are also other privileges and requirements including at least 10 monitored supervisions per year, at least two formal supervisors, the submission of a formal first year report, and the submission of a second-year report.
