Job summary
Applications are welcomed from specialist registrars training in adult cardiology for the post of Academic Fellow in inherited cardiac conditions and obstetric cardiology. This is a newly established post jointly funded by a recent NIHR BRC award and the Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This post will offer a unique opportunity to simultaneously undertake research to obtain a higher degree and to train in inherited cardiac conditions and obstetric cardiology. The candidate will spend 50% of the time undertaking research and 50% of the time supporting clinical services. It is expected that the fellow will generate preliminary data and apply for a clinical research training fellowship within a year of starting the post.
The research activity will be undertaken at the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Manchester. The Division comprises clinicians and basic scientists with national and international reputations in their respective fields. Research activity in the Division is supported by many major grant awards. The candidate will have the opportunity to choose a research project from three main areas of research: 1) Genomics of congenital heart disease 2) Sports cardiology 3) Cardiac channelopathies.

The candidate will have the opportunity to perform research in one of three research areas depending on their specific interest:
- Genomics of congenital heart disease
- Sports cardiology
- Cardiac channelopathies
Clinical duties
The postholder will be expected to participate in Consultant-led subspecialty ICC ward rounds (2 per week) and outpatient clinics (2 per week) and would be expected to coordinate and present cases at the ICC MDT (once monthly). There would be active involvement in running and further developing outpatient services (eg supporting nurse led genetics clinics, or physiologist led follow up clinics). As the service is expanding rapidly, there are opportunities for the post-holder to play an active role in service development.
In addition, the postholder will be expected to participate in the weekly Obstetric Cardiology joint clinic and to be the first point of contact for obstetric cardiology referrals both within and outside MFT. The postholder will attend the monthly regionwide obstetric cardiology MDT and there will be the opportunity to attend and contribute to the weekly complex maternal medicine MDT
The postholder will participate in the middle grade (Cardiology Registrar) on-call rota (currently 1:12), which carries an out of hours supplement added to the basic salary. Routine clinical activity is suspended when on-call.
