Specialist Occupational Therapist in Parkinson’s Disease

Job summary

We have successfully bid for funding frp, Parkinson's Disease UK for two 0.5 WTE AHPs - one a SALT and the other an OT. These posts will allow us to provide all encompassing Parkinson's therapy service within our Day Hospital clinics. Providing a Parkinson's SLT / OT service will ensure our AHP service is specialised as training will be provided to post holders.

The Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) will lead a new swallow and sialorrhea clinic whilst the second 0.5 WTE post will be an Occupational Therapist who will deliver our Advance care (end of life) clinic and provide both daily living aids and equipment as well as supporting fatigue and anxiety management for patients at their most vulnerable. This provision would help patients when they are at their most vulnerable. Both will work closely with our MDT to provide a fully integrated care model.

Main duties of the job

  • To address unmet needs of PwP who attend the day hospital.
  • Assessing the impact cognitive decline has on the PwP (Person with Parkinson's) visuospatial functioning that plays a major role in the individual's ability to maintain their independence and safety- from issues around dexterity and activities of daily living to cueing and balance techniques.
  • Advanced Care clinic - fatigue and anxiety management, dementia support/ signposting for carers. Access to appropriate equipment.
