Job summary

Whatever you need to be your best, you'll find it all here with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT). Bringing together hospitals and community services from across Manchester, Trafford and beyond, we're pooling our resources, state-of-the-art facilities and specialist services to deliver even better patient care. With a diverse pathology and an extensive ground-breaking research portfolio, we're also the providers of one of the UK's largest laboratory services.

We have exciting opportunities for Biomedical Scientists within our Histopathology laboratory at the Oxford Road site. The department has recently implemented SMART automation with the installation of the Sakura Tissue Tek a120 automated embedding station which is capable of embedding up to 120 pre-orientated tissue blocks per hour. To complete the process, the installation of the Tissue Tek Xpress x120 rapid Tissue processor is imminent; this piece of equipment will increase productivity with multiple runs per hour, providing a better service and turnaround times.

Every kind of opportunity will be provided for staff to rotate across the main areas of the service, including specimen reception and dissection, routine histopathology, special staining techniques, immunohistochemistry and cryotomy, and experience in electron microscopy would be beneficial.

Main duties of the job

We're looking for enthusiastic, aspirational and highly motivated HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists who have experience within the Histopathology department and a passion for clinical excellence, quality and a drive for career development.

You will be required to work core hours from Monday to Friday, however this may be subject to change depending on the service requirements. The post holder will be based at Oxford Road but may be expected to work at the Wythenshawe site, depending on service needs.

Suitable candidates will require post-registration Histopathology experience; however we will consider applications for a Trainee position.

The department has full HCPC training status for pre and post registration IBMS portfolios and full ISO 15189 accreditation.

So, join us and you'll discover more ways to make progress. We want talented people from all backgrounds to choose to join our diverse teams. The Trust aims to support work-life balance with flexible working options, and, with the best of both inner city and country living on our doorstep, you can enjoy a better quality of life too.

About us

MFT is England's largest NHS Trust with a turnover of £1.8bn and is on a different scale than most other NHS Trusts. We're creating the most exceptional integrated health and social care system for the 1 million patients who rely on our services every year.

Bringing together 10 hospitals and community services from across Manchester, Trafford and beyond, we champion collaborative working and transformation, encouraging our 28,000 workforce to pursue their most ambitious goals. We set standards that other Trusts seek to emulate so you'll benefit from a scale of opportunity that is nothing short of extraordinary.

We're proud to be one of the major academic research centres and education providers in England and Research and Innovation is the heart of all we do, providing you with a robust infrastructure to encourage and facilitate high-quality research programmes. We're also excited to be embarking on our new Green Plan which will set out how MFT continues to play its part in making healthcare more sustainable and tackling climate change.

As a progressive department, we currently provide a significant amount of specialist services to both clinical users and external laboratories and invest in staff development offering support and encouragement in CPD with the opportunity to attend approved seminars and external courses when available.
