Job summary

We are extremely excited to welcome a new clinical lead SLT to the Adult teams at Wythenshawe and Trafford General Hospitals!

You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the service, including acute, outpatients and a small community team. We were a large and friendly team, proud of the service we provide. You will be key in the development and future innovations of our service.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist the service manager in the delivery of an efficient, effective and quality clinical Speech, Voice & Swallowing service.
  • To organise and participate in the assessment and treatment of highly complex patients across the Trust.
  • To advise on strategic service developments in the Speech, Voice and Swallowing service.
  • To work with the Divisional SLT Lead, Consultant Therapists and clinical specialists in leading and nurturing service change including new initiatives, teaching and further service developments.
  • To act as an operational lead within the service.
  • To work as an independent practitioner responsible for own caseload of highly complex patients.
  • To assist the Divisional Lead in the day to day running of all aspects of the service including inpatients, outpatients and community which may involve changing and re-prioritising clinical caseloads to deal with urgent referrals.
  • To be able to access, understand, present and use these statistics to demonstrate the performance of the service through audit, to staff and senior managers.
  • To ensure practice within the Therapy service at MFT adheres to professional codes of conduct and practice guidelines in conjunction with operational manager.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To contribute to the development of joint working with other agencies for the services that fall within the clinical area.
  • To deputise for the Divisional SLT Lead in their absence.
  • To contribute to the management and assessment of the implementation of alternative models of service delivery and new ways of working within the services managed.
  • To be responsible for the developing, planning, implementing and monitoring of key policies which meet external requirements as requested by operational manager.
  • To be proactive in seeking alternative sources of funding to allow purchase of necessary equipment (eg charitable bids)
  • To ensure that all AHPs and assistants in the service have clear professional, clinical and managerial leadership.
  • To work with the clinical specialist staff and Speech, Voice and Swallowing management to identify service objectives which reflect and support the Trust and senior managers objectives as well as the needs of the department in conjunction with operational manager.

Communication

  • To possess advanced communication skills which allow the individual to confidently articulate and communicate with a range of managers, professional leads, consultants, across departments, organisations and agencies.
  • To possess exceptional presentation skills and to be prepared to share experience of best practice on a national level, including the presentation of papers and posters.
  • To be able to describe complex pathologies, investigations, diagnoses and treatment options that may be sensitive or contentious to patients/carers in a manner appropriate to their needs and level of understanding.

Managerial

  • To assist the Divisional SLT Lead in management of staff including recruitment, management of sickness absence, appraisal, consideration of flexible working requests, annual leave, staff working rotas and to assist with the management of disciplinary/capability issues.
  • To work with the team to ensure good communication and collaborative working exists in order to facilitate the rotational programmes, student supervision, clinical governance and other service wide issues.
  • To have direct line management of SLT clinical staff.
  • To assist the Divisional SLT Lead to ensure the effective use of resources against agreed budget.
  • Take a lead role in meetings at which broad professional and service issues may be discussed.
  • Be a flexible member of the management team covering for colleagues as required.
  • Assist the Divisional SLT Lead in promoting and monitoring the involvement of patient and carers in service delivery and development.
  • In liaison with consultant staff, clinical specialists staff and senior manager formulate departmental operational policies and procedures which set standards of performance in line with Trust and professional standards, and direct staff accordingly.

Audit / Research / Development

  • To assist the Divisional SLT Lead to ensure a robust Clinical Audit Programme in line with Trust Clinical Governance Programme
  • To support the consultant therapists in delivery of clinical trials as appropriate. To develop staff skills to undertake audit and research studies of relevance to the service and facilitate the consultant therapists in developing a research culture.

Education

  • To provide managerial supervision, teaching and guidance to the Speech, Voice and Swallowing staff and Clinical Specialists.
