Occupational Therapist - Inpatient Mental Health

Job summary

We are looking for an Occupational Therapist (OT) to join our award-winning Allied Health Professionals team in Portsmouth. This post will be across the acute adult and older persons' wards at St James Hospital and fully embody our award-winning, One Referral: One AHP model of care.

This post is primarily inpatients based but there is the expectation that community work will be undertaken in line with our One Referral: One AHP model as we aim to allocate the same OT throughout an individuals journey.

You will receive regular supervision from experienced senior OT Clinicians to support the development of transferable and specialist skills to be able to assess, formulate and deliver intervention plans for adults of all ages who are experiencing acute or severe mental illness and dementia. You will be supported to attend excellent local training as well as appropriate OT specific training.

You will work alongside innovative and friendly multi-disciplinary teams (MDT) consisting of OTs, OT Assistants, Physiotherapists, Physiotherapy Technicians, Social Workers, Nurses, Healthcare Support Workers, Psychologists and Doctors.

We are looking for someone who is flexible and has an understanding of the recovery model and has a rehabilitation focussed approach. You will need to be interested and passionate about working with adults of all ages with acute and severe mental illness and dementia.

Main duties of the job

You will have responsibility for a caseload of patients assessing their needs, formulating intervention plans, delivering interventions and evaluating outcomes. This includes work delegated to OT Assistants or other junior members of staff.

Act as a link OT for an assigned MDT which involves being the point of contact for referrals, feed back on assessment and intervention plans withing MDT meetings as well as provide profession specific advice.

Support the development of and supervise junior members of staff once competent.

Support the delivery and evaluation of OT group work programmes.

Working under the supervision of a Senior Occupational Therapist they must ensure that they work within the scope of their competency and that their practice meets Trust and professional standards.
