Job summary

Special School Nursing (SSN) is a developing field of nursing where you will use and develop a multitude of clinical and holistic nursing skills. We provide SSN to nine Special Schools across the Southampton, Hampshire, IOW and Portsmouth and we are looking to recruit a SSN to work with us primarily in Forest Park School.

The SSN team works collaboratively with children, families, school staff and the wider multi-disciplinary team within the education setting to ensure a supportive and caring learning environment. The nursing team are responsible for ensuring the health needs of the children are met using a family centred approach to assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the health needs of the children within a specialist education provision. The role will include teaching and training of school staff, creating care plans and supervision of delegated skills including children and young people with a range of complex care, epilepsy and seizure management, enteral feeding, tracheostomy care, caseload management and line management of a small specialist team.

The candidate must hold either a registration as a Childrens or Learning Disability Nurse with recent experience of working with children and people with learning disabilities. Previous experience of special school nursing would be desirable.

Main duties of the job

To meet the needs of patients and their families to achieve improved health outcomes and promote health and wellbeing while demonstrating care, compassion, competence, communication, courage, and commitment. Care is based on comprehensive assessment, ensures continuity and is patient/client centred, culturally sensitive and evidence-based and which promotes independence.

Responsible for co-ordinating the work of the team, influencing clinical decisions and monitoring the quality of patient care provided through utilising and maintaining expert clinical knowledge relevant to own field of practice, underpinned by theory and expertise.

Manage a caseload/named nurse.

Supervise junior members of staff, students on placements.

To develop and maintain a culture of service improvement which promotes quality and safety and striving to do better.
