Job summary

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work in a busy and thriving youth justice team in the city to shape and further develop a highly specialist speech and language therapy role .

Children who enter into youth justice have a range of vulnerabilities and need a multi-agency holistic response to address their offending behaviour. Nationally, 70% of the Youth Justice cohort are known to have a speech and language needs and in Southampton, over the past 12 months, the team have really valued the support and specialism of a Speech & Language Therapist, to better engage children, ensure effective interventions are delivered, understand their risks and needs better and advocate for them in other areas such as education settings.

This role is embedded in a multidisciplinary team and the post holder will work with the police, probation services, social care and CAMHS as well as the youth justice team.

Southampton City Council Youth Justice Team has well established links with specialists in health and you will receive clinical supervision and professional development opportunities from the HIOWH Children's Therapies team as well as comprehensive inductions and support mechanisms in the youth justice team.

This is a 30 hour per week permanent post, seconded into Southampton Youth Justice Service.

Main duties of the job

*To be a source of specialist knowledge and provide a highly specialist Children's Therapy Service to 12-19 year olds with SLCN in the context of Youth Justice.

*To provide a lead role across the Service & Trust for a Clinical Pathway, working with Locality Leads and other Clinical Pathway Leads, providing clinical leadership, driving forward service development, maintaining standards and ensuring the provision of up to date evidence based care.

*To devise and deliver training packages to staff in the Justice sector/SLT service as required.

*To support and develop skills in others (either within the NHS Speech and Language Therapy Service or staff working in Justice) for working with 12-19 year olds who have SLCN in the context of the Justice system.

*To develop a care pathway and procedures within the YO team and within Solent NHS SLT Service to support SLCN in 12-19 year olds within Youth Justice.

*To devise, implement and analyse outcome measures to monitor the impact of the role within the YOT and to inform and develop the nature of the role or potential service, over time.

*To work as an autonomous practitioner, in collaboration with health, education and justice sector staff, 12-19 year olds and their parents, to deliver integrated specialised packages of care to children with SLCN in the Youth Justice sector.

*To provide specialist clinical advice and recommendations to justice sector staff working with 12-19 year olds with SLCN
