Job summary

As a Health Care Support Worker, you will work closely with service users, their families and carers. You will play an important role in ensuring those who use our services have a positive and supportive experience.

You will need to be kind and responsive and remain professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide. You will need to have good communication skills and be able to demonstrate a caring and supportive approach to working.

The Orchards comprises of a 20 bedded Acute Ward and 10 bedded PICU for both male and female adults. We provide assessment, care and treatment for adults with serious mental illness and/or personality disorder, who may present with challenging behaviours.

You will need to be able to work a variety of shift patterns including nights and weekends.

Main duties of the job

As a Health Care Support Worker, you will provide physical and psychological care to service users in accordance with the specified plan of clinical care. You will carry out duties as designated by the person in charge and accurately record patient/service user information. In addition to this, you will provide support to relatives/carers

Qualifications

Essential

  • GCSE in Maths and English or equivalent.
  • Qualification at Level 2 or in Health and Social Care or other relevant subject.

Experience

Essential

  • Ability to undertake and pass Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA) training as required for role.

Desirable

  • Experience in working in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience of working in an environment where clients demonstrate challenging behaviour

Additional Criteria

Essential

  • An ability to follow care plans as determined by a qualified practitioner.
  • An ability to carry out routine observations and to advise a qualified practitioner where a change in care may be required.
  • Ability to recognise a deteriorating patient and to escalate concerns.
  • An ability to recognise and act appropriately in an emergency situation requiring the intervention of
  • a senior nurse, doctor, or emergency services.
  • An ability to prioritise workload.
  • Able to work as part of a team.
  • Communication skills required where a client may present with complex needs and persuasion or negotiation is required to ensure the most appropriate care is given.
  • An ability to use general IT applications.
  • Knowledge and understanding of confidentiality, and especially how that would apply in a Health setting.
  • Be able to demonstrate and understanding of the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion and how they apply to staff and patients in a healthcare setting.
  • Able to demonstrate personal commitment to challenging discrimination and promoting equalities, at an appropriate level for the post
  • The role requires Enhanced DBS.
  • The role requires the post holder to sign up to the Automatic Renewal DBS service.
  • Is able to work legally in the UK.
  • Is able to work with vulnerable children and adults.
  • Ability to travel daily for meetings across a range of sites in Southampton/Portsmouth/Hampshire
  • For posts which require a professional registration, postholders hold a valid up to date registration with their professional body.
  • For posts where postholders are required to drive as part of their role they hold a valid full driving licence which enables them to drive in the UK.
