Job summary

Southern Health NHS Foundation provides specialist mental health services, learning disability services, community physical health services including community hospitals and specialist inpatient units, and primary care across Hampshire, and is one of the largest providers of its kind in the country.

We are looking to recruit an SAS doctor in adolescent psychiatry to join the medical team of 2 consultants and core trainees at Leigh House General adolescent unit based in Winchester, Hampshire. This is a 10 sessions/week post and is required due to a retirement. Leigh House admits up to 10 adolescents with a wide variety of mental disorders. They are usually detained under the Mental Health Act.

Applications are invited from doctors with some experience of psychiatry or with paediatric/GP experience who are interested in this exciting speciality. You will be supported to develop your career and professional interest and will join an existing team of professionals committed to improving the experience and outcomes of young people in secure care.

Main duties of the job

Work in conjunction with the consultants at Leigh House to provide a service for up to 10 inpatients

Provide medical management for inpatients on a day-to-day basis. With a particular focus on physical health care of patients, considering many of the young people have eating disorders. Provide regular psychiatric reviews of inpatients

Contribute to risk assessment and risk management undertaken by the Multi-Disciplinary Team

Provide routine psychiatric advice and support to colleagues within the Multi-Disciplinary Team

Ensure that his/her prescribing practice follow Trust Policies and will ensure that they keep up to date with clinical advances in treatment

Provide pre-admission assessment and advice for patients who are referred to our service; and to prepare assessment reports under consultant supervision

Complete reports as necessary, depending on experience, for Mental Health Act review tribunals and managers' hearings

To undertake administrative duties, including the use of RIO associated with the care of patients

To ensure that clinical activity is accurately and comprehensively recorded and submitted to the Information Department

The post holder will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services and will share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.

To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme

  • Recognised basic Medical Degree
  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice

Experience

Essential

  • 3 years full time hospital service in Psychiatry (CT3 or higher grade) since registration
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in acute & community psychiatric settings
  • Knowledge of UK Hospital Systems (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Experience in other Psychiatric sub-specialities
  • Experience in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
