Job summary

The Southern Health MSK service is advertising Band 6 MSK Physiotherapy role(s) within our Fordingbridge locality. Full time and part time applications are welcomed. The large MSK service across Southern Health takes pride in delivering high quality care and rehabilitation in the community. As a team member you will have access to regular clinical supervision, access to funding through our ACE academy and support on your journey towards advanced practice. We are very happy to discuss flexible working options and the Fordingbridge site offers free onsite parking for staff.

Alongside a varied MSK caseload, the successful applicant will have opportunities for leadership responsibility of band 5 staff and students. The service is committed to supporting those staff that wish to work towards advanced practice accreditation and there will be ample opportunity to build and develop their portfolio against each of the four pillars.

There is an extensive professional development programme aligned against an education document which is in place for all MSK staff. Alongside the support already mentioned, we actively support individuals that wish to pursue post-graduate study. With our orthopaedic triage team, we have developed an apprenticeship scheme that allows B6 staff to spend time with and develop clinically within a specific MSK area for a six-month period.

Main duties of the job

a)Undertakes highly skilled musculoskeletal assessment of patients including those with highly complex presentations and from this formulates a diagnosis and treatment plan which is carried out as an autonomous practitioner.

b)Takes a role in the supervision, teaching and appraisal of senior, junior and rehabilitation assistants, physiotherapy students and other members of the multi disciplinary team.

c)Deputises for Team Leader as required.

d)Active involvement in service development for the department, Trust and profession.

e)Complete tasks assigned/delegated by team lead in a timely and professional manner.

f)Supervises, initiates and participates in evidence based projects, assists in implementing changes within designated team/area and setting and monitoring standards of practice.

(Clinical)

a)To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of the practitioner's professional activities.

b)To take responsibility for the highly specialised assessment, treatment and advice of patients referred by medical staff, General Practitioners or other health professionals including extended scope practitioners.

c)To interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses, prognoses and recommend best course of intervention in a wide range of highly complex musculoskeletal conditions.

d)To demonstrate highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients

e)To be competent in assessing a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions based on theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, often in situations where conflicting evidence is present.

f)To be responsible for own case load and manage clinical risk.

g)To continually reassess patients in order to progress treatments effectively and advise patients, employers and occupational health departments on the appropriate time to return to work, sports and other activities

h)To co-ordinate intervention which may include other disciplines; advises and educates patient/carers/relatives/other health professionals. This includes referring to other specialties after consulting with senior team members as appropriate.

i)To be responsible for maintenance of accurate written and electronic records, to include comprehensive progress and discharge reports to medical referrers.

j)To demonstrate physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessment and interventions including manual therapy techniques and therapeutic handling.

(Management/Leadership)

a)To assist the Team Leader and other senior staff, in the efficient day to day management of the musculoskeletal outpatient department.

b)To supervise the professional development of designated staff, including students and assistant staff.

c)To be responsible for the daily supervision of designated staff including staff appraisal, performance management, and act as a panel member in staff recruitment

d)To ensure that all accidents and complaints are reported to the Team Leader immediately and that appropriate action is taken by those concerned.

e)To participate in the Trust Appraisal Scheme, both as appraisee and as an appraiser.

f)To attend and, when requested lead in departmental staff and peer group meetings.

g)To be responsible with other team members for competent use, repair and maintenance reporting of all electrotherapy equipment, gym equipment and patient appliances for the clinical area, ensure that Rehabilitation Assistants attain competency prior to use.

3.Education, experience, workforce development and training

a)Reporting directly to team lead for supervisions, amount based on experience and individual requirements.

b)Apprenticeship scheme for band 6's, wishing to increase knowledge in specific MSK related areas. Subject to application and interview, time given to attend in working day.

c)Opportunity to apply annually for external funded courses, based on areas identified in PDR and departmental needs.

d)Monthly team meeting, including In Service training from peers.

e)Established band 6 training programme.

f)Annual attendance to Trust wide study day.

g)To mentor an allocated band 5 physiotherapist; support, PDR, supervisions, notes and patient discussion (booked by band 5). Frequency and time based on their needs and experience.
