Job summary

At Leigh House and Austen House we are reviewing the pathways for our young people and increasing our dietetic input as part of this review. As our Specialist Dietitian you will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of a comprehensive and responsive specialist dietetic service for the young people with eating disorders.

Leigh House offers Inpatient and Day Services on a purpose-built site on the outskirts of Winchester. You will also be supporting the nutritional health and wellbeing of a small cohort of young people admitted to Leigh House Hospital that do not have eating disorders. You will work as an important and respected member of the multidisciplinary team, and work closely with the Lead Nurse for Nutrition and Eating Disorders.

Austen House offers inpatient treatment for young people who can present with disordered eating at times during their admission to the unit.

The clinical aspect of this role includes full assessment of nutritional needs; providing input to formulation meetings and management of physical health. Involvement would also include supporting supervision and development of policies and procedures, highlighting the specialist dietetic knowledge that may be included. We are looking for someone that has experience of paediatric dietetics or someone that has previously worked within mental health services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide an effective and high quality specialist dietetic service within the multi-disciplinary Eating Disorders Service. The post holder will work flexibly across care areas including providing input to patients within the general adolescent setting, the Day Support Programme (DSP) , and the low secure adolescent unit.

The post holder will support the DSP in all aspects of the patients' dietary assessment and management, as well as providing some meal support and nutritional/educational groups in order to achieve a high quality service for patents with highly complex needs.

*Provide a high quality dietetic service to patients attending the Eating Disorders Service maintaining firm and consistent boundaries with these patients.

*Be involved in the dietetic part of the DSP and assessments as appropriate.

*Run a nutritional group within the DSP.

*To contribute fully in a weekly multi-disciplinary patient review meeting.

*To establish the Dietitian as an expert dietetic resource within the multi-disciplinary team.

*To advise patients, families and carers on appropriate dietary interventions in a format that is understandable, clear and promotes dietary change.

*To communication effectively with patients and carers. Skills of persuasion, motivation, explanation and gaining informed consent will be used with a wide variety of patients with complex needs.

*Assess dietary intake in detail, lifestyle patterns accurately and record information in patients' notes.

*To assess and decide upon any dietary intervention required to treat or assist in the treatment of the patient's eating disorder and to use the appropriate skills and tools to estimate food portion sizes and assess dietary intake in detail, where appropriate.

*Communicate effectively with the multi-disciplinary teams across all care areas and to work with them on any policies and procedures on nutritional matters relating to eating disorders.

*To act as a specialist resource and provide nutritional advice to help other mutli-disciplinary team members working with eating disorder patients.

*To advise and communicate with multi-disciplinary teams caring for medical admissions, advising on re-feeding syndrome. This will include the hospital dietitians, medical staff and pharmacists.

*To liaise with primary care on the nutritional management and monitoring of very low body weight individuals.

*To undertake audit and research into the role of nutrition in the group of patients.

*Manage and prioritises own work load and work within the professional Code of Conduct.

*Liaise with other specialist eating disorder dietitians nationally and local general dietitians over specific dietary problems or queries.

The post holder will promote the concept of continuous development of self and other staff and facilitate a learning environment that is conducive to the acquisition of further knowledge and skills. They will attend relevant courses/conferences and feedback new knowledge to colleagues, keeping up-to-date with developments in dietetics and eating disorders and incorporate evidence-based strategies into the working environment, The post holder will liaise with other specialist eating disorder dietitians nationally and local general dietitians over specific dietary problems or queries.

  • Nutrition and dietetic degree
  • State registration in dietetics
  • Registration with Health Professionals' Council
