Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably experienced professional to be an integral member of the forward- thinking senior radiography team based primarily at Lymington New Forest Hospital (LNFH) and rotating to work in the community sites at Romsey and Hythe. This post will offer the opportunity to potentially develop and extend skills whilst gaining experience in radiography and management.
The main job purpose is day-to-day management of the X-ray and Fluoroscopy services, ensuring an efficient, safe, high quality, patient focused service. Our Radiology service is regarded highly by patients and referring clinicians in the region..
LNFH is a busy, community hospital with an Urgent Treatment Centre, situated just outside the attractive Hampshire town of Lymington, on the south coast - well known for its sailing facilities and the New Forest National Park. It is in close proximity to both Southampton and Bournemouth with good road, rail and air links. Our work necessitates working cohesively with professionals from the acute Trusts of Winchester, Southampton and Bournemouth.
The department is completely digital; we are soon to replace three more x-ray rooms with digital Siemens equipment and have just opened a new imaging suite at Hythe Hospital. In the community we offer x-ray and ultrasound. At Lymington Hospital we have general x-ray, fluoroscopy; with a multipurpose C-arm unite, a mobile image intensifier for use in operating theatres, and DXA services.
Main duties of the job
*To work as a senior member of the radiography team at Lymington New Forest Hospital and the satellite sites at Hythe and Romsey, using initiative, skills, and knowledge to provide an efficient and high quality, patient focussed imaging service whilst dealing with patients and managing patient priority in a caring professional manner
*To promote and encourage the highest professional and technical standards in all staff and students using personal example and constructive supervision
*To have an interest in all aspects of diagnostic radiography and an ability to develop skills in new technology and alternative imaging modalities e.g. CT, MRI and Ultrasound
*To have an interest in developing and leading educational training sessions to staff and students
*Maintain a commitment to continuing professional development and a high level of technical and theoretical skills ensuring a personal CPD portfolio of evidence is kept up to date
*To participate in the Governance of the department including X-Ray equipment Quality Assurance, Risk Management, Health and Safety and Audit activities
*To participate in extended day working as required (e.g., 08:00 -- 18:00)
*To participate in the on-call out of hours service (e.g., 17.00-08.00) provided to the Urgent Treatment Centre and hospital wards at LNFH

*To apply highly developed skills and experience with consistency and accuracy across a range of radiographic equipment and techniques undertaking all radiographic examinations as required in line with departmental protocols - producing high quality images and ensuring accurate details of the examinations are recorded on the Radiology Information System
*To use professional judgment to ensure only acceptable and appropriate examinations are undertaken, giving advice to more junior staff and discussing requests with referring clinicians when appropriate
*To manage own work and time within defined areas and adapt working practices on a daily basis to accommodate changes in workload in order to provide an optimum service
*To ensure that urgent findings are communicated to referring clinicians and patients are directed accordingly
*To identify radiographic abnormalities on radiographic images and evaluate images, with junior colleagues and students with regards to abnormal findings and radiographic technique
*To participate in the necessary quality control processes at appropriate intervals as dictated by departmental programme
*In the event of equipment fault or breakdown, ensure appropriate warning or advisory signs are displayed to prevent inappropriate use of the equipment
*To provide professional information and support to all patients. Use professional judgment and skills to make necessary allowances for patients with physical or learning disabilities where there may be barriers to understanding. Take appropriate action to deal with violent or abusive patients within departmental protocols
*To be competent to perform a CT head scan and carry out emergency CT head scans when required according to the Out of Hours Service
*To deal effectively and responsibly for the safe disposal of, blood, bodily fluids, vomit, body odours, and sharps
*To provide a pleasant environment for patients by monitoring the x-ray rooms and ensuring they are clean and tidy at all times
*Use appropriate protective equipment and systems of work to protect self and others in accordance with Ionising Radiation Regulations and Health & Safety Regulations
*Participate in out of hours working and extended day working as required and ensure the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to provide a complete out of hours general radiology service (including CT examinations) are maintained
