Job summary

An opportunity has arisen within adult forensic services to appoint a motivated, passionate and inspirational leader into the Band 7 Clinical Ward Manager Post on Starling ward, which is a 17 bedded female ward. Southfield provides low-secure mental health inpatient care for patients detained under the mental health act. Some patients admitted to Southfield service may have a forensic history or offending behaviour and can be subject to home office restrictions. The Unit also supports patients with complex non-forensic presentations principally associated with challenging behaviour, emerging personality disorders as well as psychosis, and other mental disorders. In addition, most patients have long-standing complex problems that cannot be safely or successfully cared for in acute inpatient wards.

The post holder will work alongside a designated band 7 Clinical improvement lead to support a well-established, enthusiastic team that provides high-quality care to patients.

Main duties of the job

As the Clinical Ward Manager you will have continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the developing, implementation and evaluation/assessments of programmes of care and setting standards of care, the management of a designated ward including the deployment and supervision of staff where the teaching of students and/or extensive nursing intervention is required.

You will have continuing overall responsibility for the management of nursing services within the Unit, providing flexible cover across other Units during those times when such duties are delegated by Modern Matron/Service Manager whilst on call or to cover for leave/absence.

You will take lead responsibility to assess and make nursing recommendations to the Responsible Medical Officer on the suitability of Service Users for admission to the Unit and formulate policy relevant to your sphere of influence.

You will carry continuing responsibility for the management of the total resource within your area and you will have direct clinical involvement with the defined speciality of forensic mental health nursing.

Under the overall direction of the Service Manager/Modern Matron, you will maintain high standards of patient care and maintain a supportive leadership profile for the Charge Nurses, Mental Health Nurse Practitioners and Health Care Support Workers.

*Undertake responsibility for the implementation of Trust personnel policies.

*Provide the Modern Matron with statistical returns as requested e.g., sickness, annual leave, etc.

*Carry responsibility for the planning and co-ordination of annual leave, maintaining appropriate staffing levels and skill mix of ward area.

*Provide effective leadership by setting clear objectives and defining roles of staff.

*Lead the nursing team, delegating work, organising rotas on an equitable basis and ensuring appropriate skill and grade mix.

*Hold responsibility for overall staffing arrangements and nursing rotas organising the most effective use of manpower and skill mix within available resources.

*Ensure that nursing staff adhere to the NMC Code of Conduct and make periodic checks on the presence of staff names on the live register.

*Participate in the planning and commissioning of new services.

*Participate in the formal review and evaluation of the services provided.

*Demonstrate effective leadership skills to the ward team ensuring a high level of morale within the clinical area, sound organisation, dissemination of information and good communications.

*Ensure reports, statements and investigations of accidents, incidents and complaints are carried out and the appropriate authorities are notified.
