Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a clinical psychologist with enthusiasm and a commitment to working within the area of community patient care to provide specialist psychological input to this service.

A suitably experienced Band 7 clinical psychologist may be considered for this post with a preceptorship leading to Band 8a following completion of a formal log of competencies, usually over a period of 18 --36 months, (depending on experience already obtained). You should have experience of working with people with acute, chronic and severe mental health problems, where severe interpersonal difficulties may be part of their presentation. We are looking for someone who has well developed interpersonal, clinical, quality improvement and research skills, with the resilience needed to thrive in a busy community-based service.

You will also be part of the wider Southampton Psychological Service, comprising of clinical psychologists and specialists in psychological therapy with expertise in CBT, DBT, CAT, EMDR and Psychodynamic approaches, with an emphasis on evidence-based practice and research.

We have good supervision structures and an excellent track record of CPD, as well as strong links with Southampton University, particularly with the Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology and the MSc/Diploma in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Severe and Enduring Mental Health Problems.

Main duties of the job

The successful post-holder will support in developing, organising and delivering psychology services within one of our community services. The post-holder will provide specialist psychological assessments formulations and interventions. The role will also offer supervision, consultation and training to staff within the multi-professional team.

The postholder is a member of the multi-professional team. They will be required to work as an autonomous, independent practitioner responsible for their own work and interventions and for the interpretation of agreed guidelines and policies in providing a highly specialist Psychological service to individuals referred to the Southampton East Community Mental Health Team (CMHT). This may include working with families/ carers or other identified person where appropriate. Individuals will primarily present with complex psychological problems that would benefit from the services of the Southampton East Community Mental Health Team (CMHT).

  • Doctoral level training in psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996), including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Registered with the Health Care Professions Council as a Psychologist
  • Training in Clinical Supervision
  • HCPC RegistrationTraining and qualifications in CBT, family work, research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
