Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Physician Associate in Southern Health. This is a general medical job working in Lymington New Forest Hospital which is a small medical hospital based in the New Forest.
The hospital has 68 beds split between an acute admissions unit, 2 medical wards, a stroke unit and a number rehabilitation beds. We see acute medically unwell admissions and provide medical care for patients, and also serve as part of the rehabilitation resource for the wider region.
Main duties of the job
Join a dedicated and professional hospital team providing high quality care to our local population.
The Physician Associate will work on the wards as part of the team providing the care of inpatients.
The post holder will be required to:
Take part in all the treatment and healthcare of patients
Practice under the supervision of the Consultant Physician, Take histories and perform physical examinations of patients when required.
Establish differential diagnosis, making appropriate treatment plans and initiate treatment
Record or dictate the history and physical condition in the medical record
Order and interpret diagnostic laboratory tests, radiological studies or various other therapies
Discriminate between normal and abnormal findings
Refer patients to appropriate community health facilities, agencies and resources.
Perform diagnostic/ therapeutic procedures, subject to PA training / experience such as; (A)Initiation of Basic /Immediate life Support in all patients and in all settings (B) Phlebotomy (c) ECG (D) Arterial blood gases
Management of final patient disposition, including admission and discharge
Teaching other staff groups e.g., nursing, Physician Associate students, medical students, junior doctors
Attend the Trust Physician Associate training programme
Maintain knowledge and proficiency in medical practice through CPD
Meet their Clinical Supervisor monthly for 1 to 1 meetings, the clinical supervisor will be a consultant physician based within the hospital

- *BA/BSc level Degree prior to undertaking PA programme (2:2 or above)
- *PG Dip in Physician Associate Studies from a UK PA Programme
- *Current and valid certification by the UK Physician Associate National Examination (PANE) or National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) (if US Trained)
- *Member of the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians
- *Including registration on the UK Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register
- *Training in Basic Life Support from the Resuscitation Council
