Job summary

Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust are looking to recruit a Specialist Doctor in Ophthalmology to join our friendly and supportive Ophthalmology Team in the Planned Care Clinical Business Unit. We are proud to offer this post and are looking for dedicated specialist who is looking to join a progressive department, and is keen to extend the scope of services currently available.

The successful applicant will be expected to work within a clearly defined scope of autonomous practice and will be a vital participant in developing and shaping the direction of the service. Office accommodation will be provided and is usually shared with other senior clinical colleagues. Access to appropriate IT systems will be provided in the office accommodation as well as in the clinical areas. Secretarial support will also be provided by a medical secretary, with typing of clinical correspondence supported by the clinical transcription suite.

Main duties of the job

The main responsibilities are examination, investigation, diagnosis, treatment, and discharge of patients. This is delivered through independent outpatient clinics, two surgical theatre sessions (depending on the candidates' experience) and participation in the on-call rota.

Currentlyon-call duties are non-residential,17:00 to 21:00 during weekdays and 09:00 to 21:00 at the weekend, on a 1:7 basis.

There will be opportunity to engage in management such as patient safety and clinical government, teaching, training of staff, risk management, audit.

The Ophthalmology service has a well-equipped outpatient department, which runs general ophthalmology and emergency clinics as well as specialist clinics including paediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, and oculoplastic. The Trust has recently successfully implemented a virtual glaucoma service.
