All principal duties are usually undertaken under the local and distant supervision of a Consultant Anaesthetist at Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust. Anaesthetic services are provided for routine and emergency surgical, orthopaedic, urological, gynaecological, ENT and Ophthalmology lists, as well as to the Accident and Emergency Department, CriticalCare Unit, Delivery Suite and Maternity unit, as well as the Acute and Chronic Pain Service.Involvement may also be required in the initial resuscitation and stabilisation of the critically ill child.
The post has a resident on call duties, primarily within the maternity and critical care units, although may occasionally involve resident on-call duties for the emergency list(1st on-call).
The post includes being part of a shift rota to cover out of hours services on the ICU, and maternity units, and attracts 10 + 3.5 PA's of which 1.5 are for SPA.
The post includes being part of a shift 1:8 rota, to cover out of hours services on the ITU Department and maternity unit.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be expected to:1. Participate as a member of the team of dedicated medical and nursing staff, to provide anaesthetic services as needed, across the trust2. Participate in the supervision and education of doctors in training, allocated to the department3. Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research activity within the department4. Support the department in making the most efficient use of the resources available, thus be prepared to work flexibly and deputise, if appropriate, for absent colleagues and undertake additional duties in occasional emergencies or unforeseen circumstances5. Be available, exceptionally, for irregular commitments outside the normally rostered duties, which are essential for the safety and continuity of patient care.6. Be familiar with and comply with the principles expected by the GMC, as outlined in "Good Medical Practice". Thus, agree to maintain their professional responsibilities, including full and active participation in the trust appraisal process.
The successful candidates will need at least 2 years experience of anaesthesia and have passed basic competencies including for Obstetrics.
They will have worked recently in the NHS.
They should also have experience in working on the ICU, Maternity Unit and will be expected to run lists without direct supervision.
Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust serve a population of over 250,000 in North Sefton and West Lancashire. There are excellent road links to the Lake District, North Wales and the Trough of Bowland. Southport is located in the heart of the Golf Coast of England, adjacent to the Royal Birkdale and Hillside golf courses, and close to the award-winning Merchant Taylors' School.
The North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport hospital provides specialist care for spinal patients from across the North West, North Wales and the Isle of Man.
The Trust also provides sexual health services for the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton.
The Departments of Anaesthesia and Critical Care consist of 15 Consultants, 1 Associate Specialist, 16 Specialty Doctors, 6 anaesthetic, 1 ACCS and 2 Internal Medical Core trainees. In addition, the departments have 2 ACCPs, 3 Clinical Fellows and 4 Anaesthesia Associates. Both departments continue to work collaboratively and closely to ensure the wellbeing of the staff, as well as resilience of services delivered.

- Full registration with General Medical Council (GMC) with a licence to practise
- MB ChB (or equivalent)
- Primary FRCA or Full FRCA (or equivalent)
- Minimum of 6-months recent experience of working in anaesthesia within the NHS
- Successful completion of UK Foundation Programme or demonstration of Foundation Programme competencies
- Core training in anaesthesia (or equivalent)
- Initial Assessment of Competency in Anaesthesia (or equivalent)
- Initial Assessment of Competence in Obstetric Anaesthesia (or equivalent)
- Basic training in Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent)
- Ability to undertake the initial resuscitation and stabilisation of the critically ill child
- Clinical experience/ training in specialties other than anaesthesia and critical care
- ILS/ BLS
- ALS/ ACLS
- PLS / APLS
- Evidence of active and consistent engagement with clinical audit and/or QIP(s)
- Evidence of involvement in a QI Project
- Formal training in Research Methodology
- Evidence of recent and current research with relevant publications
