Starting as a newly qualified Physician Associate is exciting and daunting. We believe nurturing and supporting your first years is essential.
We want you, newly qualified PAs, to consider our two year training preceptorship in Southport and Formby across primary and secondary care.( starting Grade 6 progressing to 7) or solely in secondary care.
There are 2 tracks (1 solely within the acute trust and 2 identical tracks across acute and community placements), resulting in a total of 6 posts.
Track1: 4 6 month placements to include Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine (including ambulatory emergency care) and 2 Care of the Elderly Placements (To include stroke medicine and frailty)
Track 2: 4 6 month placements in Emergency Medicine (Including Ambulatory Emergency Care), Care of the elderly(To include stroke medicine and frailty), General Practice and Care Home Service

Main duties of the job
We want you to see patients within experienced teams that encourage you to gain confidence, to be respected for your qualification and grow into accomplished rounded clinicians ready to choose your future careerpath.
Successful candidates will undergo an induction programme and be supported and mentored in the development of their clinical practice. They will be allocated a consultant educational supervisor to supportthem to develop a professional portfolio and will be offered CPD, study leave support, and teaching time. In addition to working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, they will have the opportunity to become involved in audit/research and teaching.

Following satisfactory completion of the Physician Associate intern year and acquisition of the required competencies, there will be opportunities for progression to band 7 post to develop more specialist skills. Pleaseexpress your specialty preference(s) on your application form. Interviews will be confirmed. Southport and Ormskirk Hospital is an enthusiastic adopter of the Physician Associate role and this post will join our existing post-holders. This will be our fifth cohort of qualified Physician Associates in the Emergency Department to work alongside our teams of consultants, junior doctors, nursing staff and therapists.
Your GP attachments(if on this scheme) will be in established local practices under the supervision of a named GP. Your duties will be to address all patient needs. You will also assist the Enhanced Health in CareHomes team as part of your experience.

- Member of Faculty of Physician Associates which includes registration with the UK Managed Voluntary Registry
- Relevant first BA/BSC degree prior to undertaking PA programme
- Post graduate Diploma in Physician Associate studies from UK training programme or equivalent
- Current certification of Physician Associate National Exam or National Commission on Certification for Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
- Evidence of relevant ongoing personal and professional development
Desirable
- Additional clinical qualification and registration - Nurse, radiographers etc. that would allow study for Non-Medical Prescribing
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience of managing complex workloads and prioritisation
- Knowledge of clinical procedures and medical terminology
- Knowledge to undertake a structured clinical assessment
