Job summary

The exciting opportunity has arisen for a consultant psychiatrist to work into the old age psychiatry team at Reed Marsh House, Redcar. This post is responsible for Redcar and Cleveland locality patients who access the service. Referrals originate from CMHTs, Mental Health inpatient units, acute liaison service and care homes.

1. Redcar and Cleveland team is divided into organic and functional teams. The team manager, Clinical Psychologist, OT, support worker and social workers across both teams. A consultant Psychiatrist is responsible for each of the functional and organic teams.

2. The functional team is supported by one ANP and three Band 6 nurses and 1 Band 5 nurse. The initial assessments are completed by Band 6 nurses and Consultant input where needed, generally for more complex cases, involving diagnostic or management difficulties.

This post is for the functional service comprising 10 programmed activities. The post holder will provide consultant leadership and clinical services to functional patients within Redcar and Cleveland CMHT. Reed Marsh House is the CMHT base and offers a memory clinic and outpatient facilities.

Main duties of the job

This is a replacement post providing Consultant leadership to a sector in the Redcar locality and will be responsible for delivery of mental health services to the elderly population.

The post holder will provide consultant leadership and clinical services to functional patients within Redcar CMHT. This is a 10 PA substantive community post.

There is no inpatient responsibility. The post holder is expected to see 2 to 3 patients per clinic/community, most of them being medication and complex reviews. The majority of patients are reviewed in the community in their own home. Mental Health Act assessments request about once per week and the Mental Capacity Assessments and/or is on or and required basis. There will be visits to the care homes to review the patients. Following COVID, assessments are also being done via Attend Anywhere.

In relation to caseloads Redcar CMHT has a total caseload of 960 patients, 204 of those patients are being supported within the functional service which this post is aligned to. Resources within the organic service within Redcar CMHT include 1.0 WTE advanced nurse practitioner and 4 WTE CPN’s. In addition to this the team also include Support Workers, a Psychologist and two Occupational Therapists. On average the service receives 15 referrals per week with an estimated 80% being organic referrals.

The population served by the Redcar and Cleveland Mental Health Service Older Peoples CMHT is 30.000 aged over 65 years from a total population of 136,718 (POPPI 2018), However, as the Redcar mental health services operate on a needs led basis, some of the over 65 population traditionally served by MHSOP may be served by Adult Mental Health Services. This is a replacement post providing Consultant leadership to a sector in the Redcar and Cleveland locality and will be responsible for delivery of mental health services to the elderly. The Consultant is an integral member of a large, enthusiastic, and well managed integrated multidisciplinary team operating New Ways of Working through community and inpatient services. There is a need for a flexible approach to a pattern of working which may change from time to time depending on the demands on the various areas of the service and there will be a requirement to undertake home visits. The Redcar locality is split into two consultant posts. One of the posts is responsible for the organic client group. This post is responsible for the functional client group and the older people Acute Liaison Service (James Cook University Hospital), working with appropriately designated teams.

Tees MHSOP has 4 Community mental health teams (CMHT) who provide mental health assessments for people who have memory problems or who have other mental health problems (e.g. anxiety, depression etc).

The service has memory clinics that assesses and diagnoses people with dementia. They provide ongoing support to the patient and their carer’s, prescribe medication if appropriate and monitor their mental health.

For the functional side of the teams service promotes the recovery model. The teams follow the Functional Pathway which uses the 5P formulation model, based around recovery and co production of care plans with an emphasis on using the team daily huddle to help manage and support patients, carers and their families.
