We have an exciting opportunity for an Advanced Nurse Practitioner to shape, develop and be part of the new Enhanced Support Service (ESS) in HMP Durham.
The service is a new national initiative providing enhanced support for men in HMP Durham reduce the incidence of violent and disruptive behaviour within the establishment.
The service aims to:
- Increase the psychological well-being, pro-social behaviours, relational skills, and coping strategies of prisoners under the care of the service.
- Equip other disciplines, health, and civilian staff in the prisons with skills to improve their understanding and management of these individuals to work more effectively
- To support prisoners to remain on normal location within the establishment and to achieve compliance with the daily regime with minimal or no support.
- To improve access to and engagement with local mainstream activities and services with a view to improved engagement with future services (including OPD pathway services).
- To monitor, evaluate and provide feedback on the results and progress of the service through regular data collection and robust evaluation.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for an Advanced Nurse with skills and experience of working within Forensic and/or OPD services, preferably with a background in working with personality disorder.
You will work within a bespoke small team alongside a Psychologist and Prison Officer, focusing on intensive work with prisoners in a collaborative manner to develop motivation to facilitate better settlement and improved psychological wellbeing. You will work in a psychologically informed manner and be supported by formulations based on an understanding of the prisoners with whom you are working.
Your role will include:
- Completing mental health screening and specialist assessment, clinical risk assessments, monitoring and management of symptoms of mental illness / disorder.
- Collaboration with the service user and psychologist on the development of care planning, intervention and management plans.
- Providing GPT and evidence-based interventions
- Work collaboratively with the wider mental health service
- Ensure appropriate liaison and referral with other professionals and services, including Psychiatry.
- Providing advice and training support to discipline and other civilian staff
