This is an exciting opportunity for a committed, enthusiastic Applied Psychologist or Psychological Therapist to work in the Paediatric Diabetes Service of County Durham and Darlington. We welcome applicants to get in touch to discuss the role further prior to applying.
The successful applicant will join a multi-disciplinary team of Consultant Paediatricians, Specialist Nurses and Specialist Dietitians, working alongside a Highly Specialist Applied Psychologist and Assistant Psychologist. The post holder will be an important part of the team, supporting the needs of our paediatric diabetes caseload across the area.
The role is diverse and varied, incorporating opportunities for assessment, formulation, 1-1, family, joint and group therapeutic work, supervision of others, and teaching/training. The post reflects a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people across the area, with the successful candidate being integral to service evaluation and improvement.
The post holder will be part of a wider, supportive Paediatric Psychology Service, consisting of a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Highly Specialist Applied Psychologists and Assistant Psychologists. The service has a range of clinical and therapeutic expertise including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Family Therapy, EMDR and Neuropsychology. The team provides regular placements for Trainee Psychologists and Psychological Therapists and is proud of its links with local training courses.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be enthusiastic, motivated, and demonstrate a commitment to delivering excellent psychological care and evidence-based practice. They will provide psychological expertise for children, young people and their families presenting with Diabetes, offering psychological assessment, formulation and intervention to help them adjust and cope with the condition. They will support behaviour change to promote treatment adherence; and adopt a whole family approach to interventions. They will lead on psychologically informed care, with the provision of consultation, shared formulation and clinical supervision to other team members an important element of the role.
The post is across the County Durham and Darlington area, with clinics offered in three hospital sites: Chester Le Street, Bishop Auckland and Darlington. Due to the nature of the role, it is essential applicants are able to travel independently across the locality and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes. If necessary, adjustments can be considered in accordance with the Equality Act 2010.

The Paediatric Diabetes Team is responsible for assessment and treatment of all children and young people in the locality diagnosed with Diabetes. Working as part of the Paediatric Psychology Service, the successful candidate will be responsible for the provision of psychologically-informed care as well as adhering to guidelines regarding the provision of psychological services for Paediatric Diabetes, in line with best practice tariffs. The successful candidate will join our service at an exciting time of service transformation, as we seek to enhance psychological services within the Acute setting.
The successful candidate will work as an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based interventions to children, young people and their families, drawing upon psychological models, physical monitoring, consultation, liaison, supervision, advice and training. They will also work with local partners in the community, including schools and primary care. We have close links with our colleagues in Education, Social Care and across TEWV.
The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning and implementing care and intervention for children, young people and their families as part of the Diabetes team. They will provide psychological interventions and carry a caseload of individuals with varying needs. The successful candidate will be able to manage and assess risk and be confident in making clinical decisions independently. Training and developmental opportunities will be available for the post holder in order to further develop specialist skills and interests.
