Job summary

An opportunity has become available for a Higher Assistant Psychologist (fixed term - 12 months) to join the Mental Health Team in HMP Northumberland. We are looking for an experienced psychology graduate, preferably with some experience of working in secure mental health/prison settings.

The Mental Health team iscommitted to delivering high quality care to patients in prison. The model of service delivery aims to provide timely, evidence-based and accessible mental health assessment and treatment to meet the needs of prisoners. The post within the mental health teams provide a fantastic opportunity to develop clinically whilst based within an enthusiastic and supportive team.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop clinical skills as well as skills in audit, research and the development and delivery of training. You will gain vital experience of multi disciplinary working.

As a service we provide extensive training and learning opportunities which can help in progressing with a career in psychology. We also provide extensive supervision to support your learning and development.

Main duties of the job

The Higher Assistant Psychologist will be an integral part of the team and the role is primarily a clinical role, although there will also be an expectation that the post holder has an active role in audit and service evaluation. The Higher Assistant Psychologist will also be involved in training and supporting the team in the use of routine outcome measures.

The Higher Assistant Psychologist will be directly involved in assessment and intervention with those who have offended, both individual and group therapies. The post holder will work under the supervision of the team's Psychologist, and there is a high level of additional support and supervision embedded into the team's way of working.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in psychology.
  • Eligible for graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
  • Numeracy, Literacy and ITQ level 2 (or equivalent)

Desirable

  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice, youth work, work with offenders and/or research design and analysis

Experience

Essential

  • Experience working as a psychology assistant (or equivalent).
  • Experience working with people with mental ill health or learning disabilities (paid or voluntary).
  • Previous involvement in clinical audit, research or service evaluation.
  • Experience of using psychometric assessments.

Knowledge

Essential

  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with mental ill health or learning disabilities.
  • An understanding of the application of psychology to health care.
  • Understanding of confidentiality.

Skills
