Job summary

Are you a dynamic and motivated experienced practitioner in mental health who would like the opportunity to further develop the current service alongside an existing team?

Are you someone who can provide excellent clinical supervision and leadership to support and coach other practitioners in the team?

If the answer is yes then this might be the post for you.

You will work independently within the Crown Court as well as supporting colleagues in the Magistrates courts and police custody suites. You will have the skills and confidence to provide comprehensive psychosocial assessment and short term follow up.

You will work across organisational boundaries to provide effective liaison with police, probation, courts, prisons, primary care, secondary mental health services, social care and other statutory and non-statutory organisations to deliver the best outcomes for offenders with mental health problems.

The post requires excellent clinical skills, leadership skills, the ability to work flexibly and autonomously as well as contributing to an MDT approach. A strong understanding and commitment to team working is vital.

You will also be expected to travel across the North Yorkshire area and on occasion support your colleagues in the Durham and Cleveland team.

The post will commence with a period of induction and training.

The successful applicant will be subject to police vetting.

Main duties of the job

  • Manage information, advising, trouble-shooting, and raising issues early in the proceedings.
  • To provide clinical leadership to enable a provision of service for people who come in contact with the criminal justice system.
  • Screening, assessment and referral of defendants
  • To carry out full mental health assessments with service users, utilising structured and evidence based assessments and outcome measures to enhance clinical effectiveness and to complement the role.
  • Undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients. This will involve risk to the client, as in suicide, self-harm, physical self-neglect, substance abuse and vulnerability to exploitation as well as risk to others as in violence and sexual assault. As the clinician will be working with high-risk clients, it will be essential to apply the highest level of standards to personal safety.
  • Formulate, implement and evaluate interventions with individuals which are service user focused and recovery based, promoting social inclusion for the client group
  • Develop and maintain effective communication pathways with the main court departments and criminal justice agencies - list office, clerks, judiciary, Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), probation, Prisoner Escort and Custody Services (PECS), defence teams, police and prison service.
