Job summary

To work within a professional team of gardening / horticultural workers based at Lanchester Road Hospital Durham. Responsible for the provision of an efficient, cost effective, Grounds and Gardens maintenance service to all properties owned/leased by Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust for the purpose of health care.

To carry out grounds and gardens maintenance to all properties owned/leased by Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.

To promote at all times a positive image of people with mental health conditions and learning disabilities.

To promote at all times a positive image of the Ground and Gardens Service within the Estates and Facilities Management Directorate and the wider Trust.

Main duties of the job

Undertake general gardening duties, for example:-

  • Prepare ground for seeding and planting
  • Establish seeds and a variety of plant material
  • Identify the health and maintain the condition of general amenity turf
  • Establish and maintain a variety of different decorative amenity areas including; mixed borders, formal bedding, containers and climbers
  • Use and carry out basic maintenance tasks using a range of horticultural machinery including; handheld power tools, pedestrian controlled powered machines and ride on machines
  • edging, staking and pruning of ornamental flowering trees, shrubs and plants

About us

Led by the Grounds and gardens manager and working with a team of 5 gardeners tending to properties in the Durham and Darlington localities owned or leased by Tees Esk and Wear valleys NHS Trust.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ / Diploma / RHS Level 2 or currently working towards in Amenity Horticulture or equivalent
  • Willing to undertake any specific training appropriate to the post
  • Numeracy and Literacy to level 2.

Desirable

  • Certification for machine maintenance.
  • Pesticide certification PA1 / PA6 or a strong willing to undertake this certification
  • City and Guilds level 2 award in chainsaw maintenance and cross cutting.
  • Willing to undertake Level 3 supervisory qualification should this be requested

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of Grounds Maintenance
  • A keen and invested interest in horticulture.
  • Minimum of 12 months experience working in an amenity horticulture environment
  • Evidence of working in a team environment
  • Efficient in the use of all Microsoft Office programs including, word, excel and Microsoft outlook

Desirable

  • Experience of hard and soft landscaping

Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to use a wide range of horticultural none powered and powered tools and equipment
  • Good understanding of plant knowledge, their maintenance requirements, identification and propagation
  • Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety Regulations and legislation
