Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, motivated Applied Psychologist to join our multi-disciplinary CYP Community Eating Disorders Service in Durham and Darlington.

The post is offered on a permanent basis. During the initial 12 months in post, the successful candidate will provide maternity cover within the CYP Community Eating Disorders Service in Durham and Darlington at bases in Newton Aycliffe and Chester-le-Street. Following the initial 12 months in post, the post holder will be offered a position within the wider Durham and Darlington CAMH service.

We welcome applications from newly qualified psychologists. Applied Psychology is highly valued within the Trust with good professional support. There is a well-established and supportive Psychological Professions Network within the wider Durham and Darlington Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service supported by a highly motivated team of senior managers and clinical leads. Strong links exist between the service and local training courses in clinical psychology, counselling psychology and psychological therapy.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide psychological assessments as well as a therapeutic, consultative and advisory services in relation to adults with learning disabilities, their families and carers, according to identified clinical need. Providing consultation, formulation and clinical supervision to other team members in regard to patients is an important element of the role in addition to direct clinical work.

The D&D EDT is responsible for assessment and treatment of children and young people with an eating disorder up to the age of 18. The team is multi-disciplinary consisting of Nursing staff, Psychologists, Dietitians, Associate Practitioners, Health Care Assistants and Consultant Psychiatrists. Successful candidates will join our service at an exciting time of service transformation as we seek to enhance psychological services within our community child and adolescent mental health services, and within the EDT.

The successful candidate will work as an integral part of the MDT to provide psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based interventions to young people and their families with an eating disorder. We operate an assessment, formulation, treatment and consultancy model to ensure that young people and their families receive high quality, safe, effective, evidence-based care encompassing both physical and psychological well-being in line with national guidance around the treatment of eating disorders within the community. The team provides direct therapeutic work (family based and individual), physical monitoring, consultation, liaison, advice and training, and works with young people and families affected by eating disorders as well as local partners in the community including schools and primary care. We have close links with our colleagues in pediatrics and within locality CAMHS teams.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning and implementing care and intervention for children and adolescents with an eating disorder diagnosis as part of an MDT. They will provide specialist eating disorder interventions and carry a caseload of individuals with varying needs. The successful candidate will be able to manage and assess risk and be confident in making clinical decisions independently. Training and developmental opportunities would be available for the post holder in order to further develop specialist skills and interests should these be required.
