Job summary

The role will involve assessment and management of dysphagia and communication difficulties with adults with learning disabilities, providing relevant training and service development. This will include interventions to support risk management, positive behaviour support and inclusive communication. You will work collaboratively with professional colleagues and provide support and guidance on communication and dysphagia within the MDT and provider services. The post holder will receive excellent line management, regular supervision (including one-to-one, group and peer supervision) and opportunity to develop identified CPD needs. The ideal post holder will have had experience working with adults with learning disabilities and have knowledge of related issues and influencing directives. The post holder will have current HCPC registration.

The successful applicant will need:

  • A degree in Speech & Language Therapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • Experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist with individuals with learning disabilities, mental health difficulties and complex needs.
  • Knowledge of relevant local and national policy and directives.
  • Experience and competent in the assessment and treatment of chewing/swallowing difficulties or committed to achieving this within a specified time frame

Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity for a band 5-6 Speech and Language Therapist to join the dynamic SLT service within Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high quality, evidence-based care to adults with learning disabilities living in Darlington. You will be working in an established multi disciplinary team in collaboration with health and social care professionals including speech & language therapists, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, support workers and associate practitioners.Whilst you will be based within Hundens Lane Resource Centre, Darlington. There may also be an occasional requirement to provide assessment, advice and intervention to other Trust areas, including in-patient units.You will work predominantly with adults with communication difficulties, providing specialist assessment and intervention. The post holder will have the opportunity to work closely with B6 and B7 SLT's to support their learning and development. You will also be expected to delegate and supervise associate practitioners' work.We have an internal dysphagia competency programme which will be available to develop your skills in assessing and treating eating and drinking difficulties. There will also be opportunity to work towards your NQP competencies where appropriate.
