Job summary

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic person to join our growing service in a band 5 - 6 development post. This vacancy is open to either a newly qualified Speech and Language Therapist (Band 5) or an experienced Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (Band 6) wanting to further develop their skills working within adult learning disabilities (LD).

The post will be an integral part of an exciting pilot for children and young people with ASD who display functional behaviours of concern.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will hold a very small caseload of children and support children and young people, and their families/carers, who present with Behaviours that Challenge with specialist SALT assessments and interventions as part of a wider specialist care plan for their mental health.

The central base will be Acklam Road Hospital although there is an expectation that the post holder covers the Durham Tees Valley patch for the children identified as part of the pilot. The target of the pilot is 5 children within a year, however we would hope that this support can be offered to others is needed. Due to the small caseload of children who you will be working with, travelling time within the community will not impact on the delivery of care.

The hours of work will be predominantly Monday - Friday; 9am - 5pm.

The successful candidate will have experience of working within mental health/LD and ideally have knowledge of the SEND/EHCP framework.

The post allows for creative and innovative thinking and be able to demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team and on their own. There will be opportunity to link with SALT colleagues in the locality's specialist Neurodevelopment Assessment Team and adjoining localities.

There will be excellent opportunities for supervision and continuing professional development within the post.

About us

This is a brand new post created as part of a pilot project and the post will be permanent. The ASD IPBS team is based within CAMHS covering the Teesside and Co Durham & Darlington area and is located at the Acklam Road Hospital site in Middlesbrough. The multi-disciplinary team works with young people up to age 18, who have a confirmed diagnosis of ASDand their families to deliver Intensive Positive Behaviour Support to prevent hospital admission or placement breakdown due to high levels of behaviour that challenges.

The post holder will provide evidence-based assessment and interventions as part of the SALT Pathway and IPBSand offer input to individuals, their families and carers, in the community. We are looking for an SALT who can work flexibly to meet service need and has the vision, energy and inspiration to develop creative, imaginative solutions to working with young people and families.

  • Degree in Speech & Language Therapy
  • HCPC registered
  • Post graduate training/ courses relevent to service user group e.g. Makaton, Intensive Interaction
  • Experience of clinical supervision

Desirable

  • Dysphagia trained or willingness to work towards this in agreed timeframe

  • Able to communicate complex and sensitive information in a manner appropriate to the individual and situation
  • Work collaboratively as part of a MDT
