Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the progressive and innovative psychology department within the Secure Inpatient Service at Roseberry Park Hospital, Middlesbrough, and the psychology department within the School of Social Sciences and the Law at Teesside University, Middlesbrough.

The Secure Inpatient Service is undergoing significant transformational change aligned with TEWV's Journey to Change. Supporting recovery for service users and wellbeing for the whole inpatient community is a vital component in service delivery. Opportunities to think creatively about supporting improvements in outcomes and wellbeing and reduction in recidivism is encouraged (e.g. we have recently worked with a drama company and service users to create a film to help with induction of new staff into the service). We are looking for an experienced practitioner who can support innovation, best practice and the achievement of excellence throughout the medium and low secure service.

We are searching for an experienced, motivated and dynamic applied psychologist to support the clinical leadership within the Secure Inpatient Service and the academic teaching and research on the MSc Forensic Psychology course at Teesside University. This position offers the post holder the opportunity to develop both their clinical and leadership skills and be an integral member of the senior leadership team within the medium and low secure service.

Main duties of the job

As Consultant Applied Psychologist you will be expected to provide clinical leadership and direction in the continued provision of excellence. You will also deliver highly specialist psychological care to clients with severe and enduring mental health conditions, autism or learning disabilities which also include significant challenging behaviours and offending histories. You will provide expert advice, clinical supervision and training to colleagues throughout the service, undertake coordination and management of research and develop projects within the service and support the Service Managers, Modern Matrons and Consultant Psychiatrists in service development.

Service development is a key aspect of the role and involves the continued support, development and review of stepped-care pathways, including trauma-informed and compassion-focused care, as well as participation in new initiatives, contribution to service planning and liaison with case managers when needed. The post affords a high degree of professional autonomy and critical judgement providing highly effective clinical leadership within an established multi-disciplinary service.

The post-holder will be an experienced applied psychologist with considerable experience of research and practice in forensic settings. You will have a proven track record of working with adults within the criminal justice system and substantial experience in the provision of at least one governed psychological therapy (e.g CBT/DBT/CAT/EMDR/Schema Therapy/Group Analysis). You will hold an MSc in Forensic Psychology conferring Stage 1 of forensic training. Completion of Stage 2 training and full membership of the Division of Forensic Psychology is preferred.

You will be expected to contribute significantly to the development of the relational model within the service and so a recognised qualification/accreditation in a relevant governed psychological therapy is essential.

You will have expertise in and ability to teach a range of psychological theories on the postgraduate MSc Forensic Psychology course. Expertise in the assessment and intervention of offending behaviour and applied psychology skills is preferred. The title Honorary Professor will be bestowed by the university upon appointment and the post-holder is expected to make a significant and ongoing professional and/or academic contribution to the university. Individuals holding honorary titles are expected to act in a way which supports the reputation and standing of the university and comply with all relevant university policies and procedures whilst undertaking activities representing the university. These include compliance with Health and Safety, Research Ethics, IT, Equal Opportunities and Data Protection policies.

You will be required to contribute to curriculum development and must have a commitment to and demonstrable potential to undertake research, development and/or scholarship to enhance teaching. The ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders to contribute to marketing and enhancement of teaching is essential. You should have highly developed oral and written communication skills, showing ability to communicate highly complex information to a range of audiences.

The post-holder will provide on average 6 sessions per week into the secure inpatient service and 4 sessions per week into the university. This however is subject to the needs of the appointing organisation and may change on occasion.
